It's really sad that @Chanimal didn't feel comfortable here. She's a Black Jewish Queer woman who I know from her writing in NewScientist. Among the drama I've seen in that time is the PlayVicious saga. I saw that community taken down by racism, here on the lovey-lefty Fediverse. But I didn't see any of the abuse myself. Not one toot. That's partly down to the excellent moderation work by my server admins, and partly down to the fact that I'm white. It would be easy to assume that it's not a problem; that Marcia and Ro and the others, and now Chanda, are overreacting to one or two bad people who slipped through the net. Easy, but wrong. White supremacy, the system that's conferred so many advantages on me and people like me, thrives in the manure of white complacency. We don't see it. But, like it or not, we're bound to it.

So what can we do about it, we white people of the Fediverse? Fudamentally, I don't know. You and I can't take down the system by ourselves. But we can start by listening to the victims. If you're white, do not try to tell anyone non-white about racism or anti-racism. They know better than you, so shut up and listen. And believe what they say. The Fediverse has a racism problem, at least as bad as Twitter, and if you don't see it that's because, like me, you're benefiting from it. Give money to racialized people who need it, if you can. Follow them and boost their voices, but don't expect anything in return. We've had our share.

These are turbulent times on the Fediverse. I hope we can come out of the chaos better than before. I'm proud of you all for keeping Mastodon such a safe place to be LGBTQIA++. It started off that way, with a large quotient of transgender people among the first Mastodonians, and it's remained so. But early Masto was also mostly white European and North American techies, and that has also remained constant. That's a failure in a world where we're the dominant minority.

As I mentioned, I've been here a long time. I'm thoroughly accustomed to content warnings, and I know how we use them. That click-to-open title section is great for hiding the punchline to a joke, or a spoiler for a TV show, or something NSFW, or just a post you know isn't going to appeal to all your followers. It's not a big deal, you can spray them all over. At the same time, they have the important function of hiding things that really are seriously triggering: common phobias like spiders or snakes, or mentions of traumatic situations real people here have been through, like child abuse or rape. So the use cases vary from trivial to essential. It takes very little effort, and it's just polite to use them for things like eye contact or AI-generated images, which give some people the creeps.
