Mental health issues are raising exponentially with young people.. Mastodon has build-in all kinds of features like blocking, muting filters etc and ‘non-features’ like constantly showing numbers everywhere on timelines, profiles etc.Please know that #Mastodon is a safe place to talk about mental health. Personally I have experienced a situation in where someone give certain signals about self harm and even worse here on Mastodon a while ago.I dropped everything and started talking♥️ Ofc offer professional help first(with phone number or anything) but try to talk!I’m not a psychologist, not by angling shot but I am human🥰 Please, if you see something like this happening take the time and talk with the person! You never know what difference it can make!

@stux Having kids has made me more and more aware of all the danger those things present to a young, developing brain. Everything is amplified when you are young, the good and the bad. @stux I had a similar situation many years back before “social media” was a real. I did pretty much the same thing but did pass on the Suicide Hotline to her and encouraged her to call and talk to someone. Chatted with her about a year maybe a little more later and she was doing well and thanked me for being there. The moral of the story is to be there, let them talk, listen and support.

@stux As a Gen Z, I can say it really is difficult and unfortunately have seen cyber bullying happen on TikTok recently… There’s a website that got taken down/seized because of various reasons. Almost everyone on TikTok blamed a kid for sharing it and having the video go viral. It lead to negative comments and the girl even went as far as deleting that account and made a new one. But you know how most of us Gen Z just go above and beyond to find the other account. Most people found it and started commenting on her new videos. You can imagine the girl’s mental health and it makes me worry because it’s sad. It’s not her fault but people keep attacking her. :blobangery: I wish something gets done but I don’t think they’ll let her go with the whole “cancel culture”. What bothered me more is that ADULTS were attacking her as well and threatening whoever leaked it.

@stux thank you for opening the conversation. My hypothesis is that in order to function in the world, we need a sense that we have some control over our lives. Unprecedented global problems have a compounding effect and undermine our sense of agency. To a confused mind, self harm may seem to give us back some control, but it is a an option that actually takes away all future possibility of control. The idea of self harm gaslights our survival instincts, and everyone is susceptible. Talking about self harm lifts the taboo and the sense of isolation that goes with it.

@stux if you get a chance to do Mental Health First Aid training, it's really good. Both the Sweetie and I ended up doing it through work (I'm a small charity manager and he's a market research analyst working with museums - so not directly related but a good skill to have for everyone).

@stux I’m in the throes of mental health crisis with my teen who has adhd with hard core black/white thinking (age appropriate) and it is weighing so heavily on our entire family. I feel isolated and unable to talk to friends and family about how awful it is for my kid and keeping him alive. Reading this was like a sigh of relief. Caring for my child with mental illness is the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. But Im not giving up.

@stux one thing I’d love is a red-dot when there is specific sections with new content. Not counter (or maybe counter option) without an algorithm pushing #adhd types into roulette gamblers, for social attention. To be honest, my idea would be a settings panel where you can change them between nothing//dot/number across app icon, and every interaction. Remember, some Fendiverse will rely on quick communications, like buisnesses.

Generally, when you block a user, they cannot follow you again. But if you're running into issues where that user creates alternates, you can do two things:🔒 Enable Follower Approval (this might be called 'Lock your account' in MastoFE). This means that the user cannot follow you unless you manually approve it. These requests will have a dedicated menu.🔴 Block the domain associated with the user, if the domain seems to be a throwaway or poorly moderated in your view. Click the ellipsis in their posts or profile, and you should see an option that resembles 'block from domain@tld'.📉 When you block a domain at the user level, it terminates activities from that domain heading to you. It has the same effect as a Fediblock, but just for you.

@sunsetfoglight @stux I'm a person, and I administer two instances and have dealt with my fair share of weeds.That user is a bot, but sometimes legitimate users will actually flag themselves as bots to limit their visibility.BAEST is an Edge Neighbor. You can only see the ellipsis when you view the locally stored copy of that account.I use MastoFE, so I'll add a screenshot for context in the next reply. Gimme a moment.

@sunsetfoglight @stux BAEST is one of those Edgy instances, you need a steel trap for a stomach to put up with them.There are versions of an account stored by your instance, and versions stored by the original instance.Think of every post that federates publicly as having copies sent and stored to the instances that are mentioned or known by your server. When you moderate content, you only affect the local copy, not the original.

@sunsetfoglight your instance does not have a stored copy. In that case, if you need to block a user who does not yet have a stored copy, you need to search for them by their handle and remote domain.When you click, you will see their profile on the right hand column and will be able to then take moderation actions.

@stux I am a Health & Safety rep in my workplace and I am also a Mental Health First Aider. It is good that mental health is being recognised and acknowledged more, but there is still a long way to go.
