@lightweight Question; is our instance only pulling in posts from people one of us follows, ie does our federated timeline display all the posts from instances hosting someone that one of us follows?

@strypey as I understand it, yes, that's how our 'federated' feed is created.

@lightweightBadly worded question in hindsight, but we got there in the end ;)@TheCoolest

@strypey @lightweight @TheCoolest not sure if this helps, but it's helped me before

@lightweight @strypey I believe it's only posts from someone that someone on your instances follows, not the entire instance.

@audiodude ah yes - sorry, I didn't read your post well enough @strypey - only the posts (and probably boosts) of those on other instances people on your local instance follow. Not the whole instances.

Intriguing. Once again, a Titter influx is forcing me to check my own understanding of exactly how the fediverse does and doesn't work. Has it ever been the case that if I'm the first person on my instance to follow someone on instanceX, that adds the whole of instanceX to the Federated timeline? Does/ did GNU Social work like this?@lightweight @audiodude @TheCoolest @liamdiprose @demoncodemonkey

@strypey I don't know about GNU Social, but my understanding is that on Mastodon, following a single person adds that single person to the federated timeline, that is all.

@liamdiproseI have seen that before, was wanting to check my understanding of it. But thanks for sharing, it's a good instinct and ignore the asshats who will tell you off for it. That's their problem ;)@lightweight @TheCoolest
