most reenactment greatly misuses and underestimates the importance of skirmishers. Alexanders pikes sliced through everyone they faced, so they mostly did what you said in your last post. infantry held opposing infantry in place and allowed for flanking skirmishers and horses to harass the enemy until they lost enough morale and broke.

the pushing is illogical from a combat perspective, since faster skirmishers would have a distinct advantage against any sort of fighting force, and their 8 foot spears would be effectively worthless in that event. imo it is more likely they faced each other across the reach of their weapons and their depth was a form of morale boost, as think lines are easily broken and the enemy routed.

you can say this all you want, but the historical record says you are wrong. in Hellenic fighting, cavalry was limited, and without a stirrup it wasn't nearly as formidable. it was mostly for running down routed units, or skirmishing itself. There are also records of peltasts doing exactly what i just said to hoplites. the phalanx was very difficult to defeat head on, but it was slow and easily out flanked by peltasts.

in fact the success the Romans found against the upgraded pikemans phalanx had to do specifically with it's difficulty in maintaining formation. The phalanx was mostly used on clear open ground, and the Roman units dominated them when the terrain shifted and became more unfavorable, because they could manage better in a loser formation and closer combat.
