As all our new users explore the #Fediverse, our instance federates with more servers, and more and more content starts to appear in our Global timeline. An inevitable consequence of this is that we start to see an increase in the amount of content that's in many cases directly against our server rules (https://ruby.social/about/more). (Reminder: when you signed up, you agreed to adhere to these rules).I'd like to talk a little bit about the #moderation that we do to handle this.

If a post breaks our instance rules, it will be deleted, regardless of where it came from.If the author is a user on our server, their account may be “limited” (hiding it unless you’re already following them or explicitly searching for them), or in extreme cases, “suspended” (removed entirely).

Note that this applies equally to content that you “boost” or “reblog” — you are bringing posts into Ruby.social and therefore have a responsibility for that content. If the author is on a different server, we will examine that server’s content and moderation rules, and if they are not compatible with ours — for example, if they tolerate porn, racism or other content that we wouldn’t allow here — then we will either limit or suspend federation with that server entirely.

We also exchange information about problematic instances with other servers, and will pre-emptively block servers that are known to be in conflict with our rules.A full list of the instances we block can be found here: https://ruby.social/about/more#unavailable-contentI’m confident that almost all of you will never notice any of this happening. To be clear though: you may not be able to see the entire Fediverse from ruby.social, and accounts that you follow may become unreachable without warning.

If you have any questions about moderation, feel free to get in touch. If you do not find this acceptable, and would prefer to be able to toot without any restrictions, then the best thing to do is migrate to another server.

@james Yeesh, did you write those server rules before or after you cut your nuts off? I'll save you some time and space on that list:>"All posts on my group-think server must adhere to the current tenants of the Regime religious faith".

@james I'm probably clicking right past it, but do you have a place that explains how you afford hosting costs and the time to moderate this server? I'm really grateful and want to make sure I'm contributing.

@james do you give notice to the user? Or is this noticeable by the user itself?

@james that's good. Thanks for maintaining this instance and hopefully you don't have to moderate much.
