I've had a night to think about it and I am unironically trusting the plan on Kherson. Completely lost in the commotion yesterday, Pavlovka (ivo Ugledar) was fully taken last night. Furthermore, UA is in the beginning phases of withdrawal from Soledar and Bakhmut. Unable to advance in the north past the lines they established more than a month ago, UA are now on the defensive in Kharkov.As has been the story of this war pretty much since day 1, the political and military realities are diametrically opposed. Politically, the loss of Kherson is hands down the biggest defeat Russia has suffered since 1991. Militarily, while I wouldn't quite call it a "nothingburger," the reality is that in the absence of concrete plans to advance on Nikolaev/Odessa, Russia was in a defensive posture in Kherson--and that such a defensive posture is infinitely better served with a major river between you and the enemy.In strictly military terms, the only real qualitative advantage to holding Kherson was the bridgehead across the Dnieper. This will not easily be replaced! However, again, in strictly military terms, the present value of this particular bridgehead is questionable at best. The main crossings at the Antonovsky bridge and Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station have been out of action for some time. There were pontoon crossings, yes, but by definition these can be set up anywhere. In the absence of any ability to repair these bridges in full, pontoons across the Dnieper at Kherson are not intrinsically more useful than pontoons at, say, Dnipropetrovsk. The bridgehead across the Dnieper is only useful to the extent that it can actually be used to conduct operations on the other side of the river. The crossing at Kherson could not be thus used; it was therefore not useful.So go ahead, tell me I'm "coping" or whatever, IDGAF. I'm a little less sanguine than I was this time yesterday about what my clout will look like on 1 January 2023 specifically, but not by much, because none of the structural factors have changed. Frankly, I am if anything *more* confident of ultimate Total Aryan Victory in this war--my clout as of 1 January 2025 will be at all time highs--because Surovikin has shown himself to be brutal and aggressive when necessary, but also willing to cut losses and preserve strength rather than remain committed to unnecessarily difficult operations for the sake of political "optics." You can take that to the clout bank.

@RowdyRamzan If you can't get ammunition across the Dnieper, you can't conduct operations across the Dnieper, simple as.In his declaration of war, Putin singled out Odessa as a war goal. I think the hard pill to swallow here is that an advance on Odessa was "out of scope" for now just given the facts on the ground and the threat of blowing the dam. But I'm not reading this withdrawal as any kind of backing down from that stated goal. Kiev may or may not be part of the Russian Federation when this is all over, but Odessa most certainly will be.

This is the 4th such mutiny in a month and a half. Russia has not won any victories since Severodonetsk. Belarus is not likely joining the war. The fact is, given the hardware Ukraine has, Russia can hardly be said to have the military advantage at this point. Furthermore, I expect Russia to lose more territory in northern Luhansk. In the Donbass there hasn't been a breakthrough in 9 months of war.

Paratrooper could then exploit that to land in Odessa or the like. If Russia went balls to the wall with their air force they could suppress AA defense and achieve air supremacy in a region for a couple day. They just need to land enough troops to secure a bridgehead for a naval landing

And what can we really say about how Syria is now? Most of it is back under Assad's control but there are still chunks that aren't. The SDF have everything north of the Euphrates because it's a "pragmatic solution" that minimizes bloodshed and also keeps Turkey on friendly terms so they can still troll the west and buy S-400s. Idlib is STILL under the control of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham/Al-Nusra.Of course, Syria is not Russia and Russia aren't obliged to completely restore Syria. But... I can't help but think Surovikin might not be the mad dog we want him to be.

British intelligence published it's belief that Russia has 3.5 times as much artillery as Ukraine firing everyday. They said that in August or July. But some other sources put it at around 9 times.
