@thor@berserker.town In Dutch we call it "Autisme Spectrum Syndrome (ASS for short)", and this does not help with the whole "assburgers" thing.

@SuperDicq i am also convinced that whoever concocted "seasonal affective disorder", i.e. SAD, was a terrible person.

@thor@berserker.town Yeah DSM V came out a few years ago and my doctor was like "Oh btw, PDDNOS is an outdated term now, you now have ASS".uh ok cool, thanks doc. I really don't get it.

@SuperDicq huh, my therapist wanted to give me PDD-NOS but due to possibilities of getting more benefits with the "Asperger" label, he went for that.

@thor@berserker.town In the DSM-V definition both PDD-NOS and Asperger no longer exist. They are both the same Autism Spectrum Disorder now. I kinda of understand because the differences between PDD-NOS and Asperger were really unclear to begin with.

@SuperDicq gut feeling is that we aren't sick and we don't have a diseasewe just have a functioning brain, and the rest of humanity is sick

@thor@berserker.town Although contemporary I think "neurodiversity", "neurodivergent" and "neurotypical" is good terminology.Neurologists have figured out that brains with autism do function differently from the average brain, with increased activity in some areas and decreased activity in some others. This terminology does also not imply that people with autism are sick and need to be cured, but that they are just different and that's fine.I also like that it seems to me that there's a little more public acceptance towards to behavior such as stimming nowadays.

@thor it’s very “I’m a Psychologist” of me. But I am neurodivergent. Just ADHD, not ASD. And yeah, I never miss an opportunity to make sure everyone knows that fact.

@thor You know what’s interesting? I’ve been a very online person since it was possible to do so. I started my doctorate in 1998. I was diagnosed with ADHD in the 1970s. And it wasn’t until the pandemic that a lot of people learned I was diagnosed as it’s ADHD. I never mentioned it online much, probably because I spent my days doing ADHD assessments and working with people with ADHD.

@thor It’s the newly-diagnosed people who are processing their diagnosis who want to talk about it the most. When I finally decided to start talking about ADHD on TikTok during the pandemic, I was shocked by how popular the videos were.

@thor The Autism community have a longer history of bonding over their diagnosis online. But obviously, we ADHDers are a giant online presence. Because of the nature of ASD, meeting online was the perfect safe space to gather. I read a great book that documents those early days for that community.
