@baskin @evangreer how are these the same thing though? Mastodon doesn't claim to provide that functionality in the first place. At best it tells you to look for the original websites cross referencing the mastodon account that has the website in its bio. There's no verification system that is manually vetted on here

@beyond9thousand Ask the admin that thinks some people are official and others are not. I have a goat I am verified. @evangreer

@baskin @evangreer i think you're deliberately missing what i pointed out there. People of celebrity and or public figure status usually have websites, and if they have a mastodon account, it is most likely that their website lists their mastodon profile somewhere on the website. This is how mastodon runs 'sort' of a verification system.https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/profile/

@beyond9thousand There is no such thing a verification on Mastodon, this an admin's or some people perception. You are free to call it "sort of" but it is not and will not be. @evangreer

@corfiot It runs the check whenever the said profile (mastodon) page is opened

@corfiot it checks the link on the profile to look for a link that points to the mastodon account, it has no requirement to fetch your IP address

@corfiot there might be an efficient way of performing this check that I'm unaware of, since this is what the documentation says> Behind the scenes, Mastodon checks for the rel="me" attribute on the link back. Likewise, Mastodon puts rel="me" on the links within profile metadata.

@corfiot not pointless at all. If you have your mastodon account link embedded somewhere on your website, or other social media handles (that enforce central verification), people already know which website belongs to you. Regardless of how it's implemented, this is a sure shot way of verifying if you are indeed the person you claim to be on mastodon.

@Corfiot @beyond9thousand I am thinking that there is an opportunity here for someone to create an authentication authority service where people can authenticate themselves with some document (bank card, passport etc) and then provide a web link for Mastodon to use for verification as it does now with web links the user supplies to his/her profile.

@paspro @corfiot given the nature of this platform, such a method is highly unlikely to be adopted

@Corfiot @beyond9thousand Mastodon will not have to adopt anything. The verification process will remain the same but the user will be able to see that the verified link is from an authority that can be trusted. The name of this field could be written as e.g. Verification Authority to indicate the fact. A click on the link will go to this authority which verifies that the person is indeed the right one stating his/her full name.

@beyond9thousand @Corfiot A Federated authority then. 😜
