since a lot of folks are becoming newly interested in escaping corporate silos and moving to community-based services, are you aware of @matrix?Matrix is to Slack and Discord, what Mastodon is to Twitter: a decentralized, federated network based on open standards/specs. It also supports full end-to-end encryption, just like Signal, so you can exchange messages privately! If you find the fediverse interesting/inspiring, I recommend giving matrix a whirl. The quickest way to get started is to head over to https://app.element.io/ and make a (free!) account (although you can also join any number of other home servers, or host your own--they all talk to each other!).If you _do_ end up checking it out, please do say hi! I'm @zkat:zkat.tech over there. I also manage a "space" (a group of channels, kinda like a Discord server) that you can join by clicking here: https://matrix.to/#/!tKdDSgQTxQzcOuTXqV:matrix.org?via=zkat.tech&via=matrix.org&via=envs.netI hope this sparks your interest! I'd love to see you over there, too!

some other thoughts: someone on here recently referred to the Mastodon migration as a good example of the whole dual power philosophy: setting up healthy, community-based alternatives to the current systems of power, ready to have people fall back to them (and all their benefits), when they're finally forced out of the current power structures.I think building that out for Matrix, even if it doesn't completely replace all your communities (yet!) is something that is worth getting started with right now! It doesn't hurt to get yourself a Matrix account, after all, and you might find some community and discover you like it a lot! (I do! I wish my Discord communities lived there!)

@zkat @matrix I suggest people who value their privacy to take a look at Privacy cards of Element’s iOS app before downloading.

@alpsoy @zkat this? it’s the stuff needed for the app to work. how can you do location sharing without access to location data? how can you find out which of your contacts are on the app without (optionally) checking contact data?

@matrix @alpsoy @zkat Aren't there alternate Matrix clients which do not have those features, and therefore do not need those (unacceptable for some) privileges? That's what I like about #Matrix - lots of different clients.

@alpsoy @zkat @matrix Its also worth considering that matrix metadata is not completely private. It was a while ago i checked but i remember usernames get exposed to central server and only way to increase privacy is to fully defederate. Plan your community there yes, plan your revolution there no.

@nat @alpsoy @zkat This is not true, and never has been true - there is no “central server” in matrix, and metadata isn’t exposed to it. only the servers participating in a given room necessarily see the metadata of that room.

@zkat @matrix last time I used matrix the UX was awful, has it seen any improvements or do messages still take minutes to load and need reloading all the time?

@childishgiant @matrix idk, I'm feeling pretty good about the improvements that have happened in Element over the past couple of years, and they've got new mobile apps coming up soon that are even nicer. I wouldn't say the UX is awful.

@zkat @childishgiant Element has exclusively dogfooded Matrix since day 1; the only other comms tool in use is an IRC server in case of a catastrophe on Matrix. Some folks might use Discord personally; that’s their call :)

@matrix @alpsoy @zkat matrix.org reply here is disconcerting. for anyone that reaches here and is concerned: the issue lies in matrix instance callbacks to matrixorg and vector.Im. the following may be slightly outdated but you can start there. look around for lockdown guides to find how to fix some privacy issues in default configuration https://github.com/libremonde-org/paper-research-privacy-matrix.org/blob/master/part1/README.md

@matrix @alpsoy @zkat for anyone that reaches here and is concerned: the issue lies in matrix instance callbacks to matrixorg and/or vector.Im. my understanding is more than 1 year old so check around for lockdown guides to find how to fix some privacy issues in default configuration.I find matrix denial of metadata issues to be strange because it's been debated widely.https://gitlab.com/prism-break/prism-break/-/issues/2176https://github.com/libremonde-org/paper-research-privacy-matrix.org/blob/master/part1/README.md

@ticho @matrix @alpsoy @zkat no, last time we checked verification can only be done through element client. so what's the use of other clients if there's just one client (element) to "rule em all"... (and element is just so heavy/laggish).if things are changed by now, and other clients work without the need for element, it might be time for a new try.. (is it?)

@stinpriza @ticho @alpsoy @zkat most clients support verification. and meanwhile element has got much faster.

@zkat @matrix And, of course, there is XMPP, which, in my view, is better suited for individual communications, whereas Matrix has obvious advantages for organisations.

@liberloebi @zkat @matrix"Matrix is to Slack and Discord, what Mastodon is to Twitter"Very well said and fully agreed. I like to add:"#Jabber #XMPP is to Whatsapp and Signal, what #Mastodon is to #Twitter."(I don't get, why sometimes there is a Jabber-Matrix flamewar, like it were about really important things like #Emacs vs the other thingy, what's its name?)#twexit
