I think I now understand Elon's idea with Twitter! :twitter: Ofc he knew people where gonna use the :verified: pixels to impersonate others so they're now banning those people actively :blobhammer: Basically Twitter now sells troll-subscriptions I guess :troll: I'd rather buy a lighter and set the rest on fire. @richardaziaThere is no real way to buy it. Buy what a single instance? Open source server project? Everything on fedi operates using an open protocol called activitypub. So even if the author of mastodon server code would change the licence and sell. The code prior is still open and development can continue. Apart from that there is multiple different implementations of social network platform built on activitypub protocol (friendica,pleroma,pixelfed etc) sothings will just continue even if som idiot pays billions of dollars. Even more. AcyivityPub is not even the only protocol that allows open and federated networks to operate. There is Zot,federation protocol,xmpp,matrix. There is really no way to "cave in" in the way that will destroy the concept. @stux

@muppeth There's not really a reasonable way to sell the code either. It's AGPL3, so he'd need the buy in of all parties to sell the code or he'd have to rewrite the code of the authors who object to the sale. On the most recent page of commits, I saw about 15 different authors, so that will be a tall order indeed@richardazia @stux

ActivityPub is more like an ecosystem with ton of applications so even if for some.weird reason mastodon goes down, you have plenty of other solutions work.What could only happen is big tech starting their own instance, trying to become the larfest one and then close it. Similar to what happen to xmpp. But thats up to the people to not fall for it. And even if this happens, well, xmpp is still a thing and actually getting.better and.better all the time.I think we learn few lessons along the way and we wont make same mistakes.@trebach @stux
