The instance I'm on must be struggling. My posts take ages to appear, I can't upload images, and I'm not seeing replies or notifications. It's all Elon Musk's fault.

Is my instance back to normal?I don't know.I've spent the last hour going through my notifications. If I haven't replied to you, it is probably because I haven't seen your post.

@fitheach I'm in the mid-range of my limits of 65-75 follows, but I can't keep up these days. I'm going to have to drop some people, if this keeps up. I hate doing that. I follow people for a reason - none of this follow4follow bullshit invented by a corporation gaming people.

@fitheach All of Mastodon is currently struggling. @mwlucas wrote a pretty decent blog post on it: https://mwl.io/archives/22381

@_xhr_ I wonder if Mastodon/ActivityPub has the right design to cope with much larger numbers. I've communicated with a few admins who setup single or two person instances, recently. The servers were consuming huge amounts of RAM and disc. I can't imagine what 1k+ users must be like.@mwlucas

@andyc Interesting. From the comments I've heard from single person instances, the current design of Fedi is already a problem. For them, it isn't being popular that is the problem. It is following a few popular people that causes the problem.@mwlucas @aral @_xhr_

@clacke @mwlucas @aral @_xhr_ @fitheach Yes. I didn't quite get why the 'Replies' have to generate so much traffic - just so they would be readily available on the commenter's instance. Maybe it's part of the AP spec.

@andyc Text replies won't be so bad. Lots of photos (me guilty) and memes (not guilty) will be onerous.I'm guessing a local CDN would be very beneficial.@mwlucas @clacke @aral @_xhr_

@fitheach @mwlucas @clacke @aral @_xhr_ Pleroma does have a media proxy cache but it's disabled by default which means it fetches the image from the originating server. This explains why very occasionally I see laggy images but I prefer it that way. Saves me disk space and bandwidth.

@fitheach @_xhr_ @mwlucas It's down to each server how well they handle the load. If one server/instance struggles, it doesn't mean they are all struggling.

@andyc @mwlucas @clacke @aral @_xhr_ @fitheach My single user pleroma experience is that the database keeps growing and it can't be pruned. Now almost at 40GB + 8GB of my photos. I increase the disk every two years or so. It's definitely getting expensive even for one active user, in the ballpark of 10 euro a month. This is however almost entirely due to bad database design on pleroma's part

@andyc @mwlucas @clacke @aral @_xhr_ @fitheach nope, this is just pleroma saving everything it ever receives, forever. The ideal setup would keep just the last month or so of messages, but ... yeah.

@andyc @mwlucas @clacke @aral @_xhr_ @fitheach the problem with these is i probably don't have enough disk space to reclaim disk space, postgres is fun like that
