PF had a more sane magic system, a better economy system, less retarded city management (WHY did buildings cost so god damn much to build in AoW3?). Unit mods are actually a brilliant idea, although some aspects about it clearly needed more balancing (*cough* the entire Assembly faction).The only real problem with Planetfall is that there's a lot of useless shit like operations you never want to use on a city because conquering it is so much easier.

@weanoob @Echigo @Immahnoob @Ryuujin @Suzu @Tamamo At least in a game like SOASE, a theoretical feature would be zooming into a planet's surface and engaging in tactics there (scouting parties for exploring, enemies deploying troops to take over colonies, etc). The problem is that the player would quickly tunnel if there was too much action happening on a planet and neglect some activity in outer space. If you've ever played Dyson Sphere Project, that game lets you do things on a planet until you decide to fly into outer space to see things from a greater scale. I don't think I would be able to handle micro with on-planet battles as well as fleet battles, especially since (in SOASE) some capital ships have abilities that are built for micro. SOASE extrapolates planet activity by having you bomb planets to take over them, and simply making development part of a planet's upgrades.

@weanoob @Echigo @Immahnoob @Ryuujin @Suzu @Tamamo Yes, SOASE is real time. If it were a turn-based game, I fear that it would lead to some insaaaaanely long turns. If you expand to another planet, that is another planet you need to handle micro on on your turn (explore, develop, or defending it). I believe it would just be too much to handle minor intricacies of on-planet action and outer-space. Plus that adds extra strain on the developer side where now you have to essentially make two games: a 4X in space that can interact with a 4X on a sphere map.
