       I'm still kinda skeptical about whether this migration will maintain momentum and how many people will just end up using mastodon dot social instead of making their own instances, but even if like, 1% of twitter's current user base ends up making their own fedi instances, it would be a huge net positive for the internet as a whole I think. I'd love to be able to see a rennaissance in users having netizenship, running their own servers and owning domains

       @emilis I've been in extreme doomer mode since 2020 and expected users on centralized social media platforms to just put up with any indignity forever and it feels like I'm being proven kinda wrong, but we'll see

       @nyx I was thinking about setting up an instance.  But I thought that I should use the app and learn my way around it first.  Is it better if we set up some more instances?  How does that help the overall network?  It seems like a bit of work to do.

       @tisforthee every fediverse server is volunteer-run and gets money solely from donations, so it helps put less strain on the servers that already exist by having users distributed across more servers or running their own. I don't think everyone necessarily needs to run their own instance, but it's good to at least try to find a smaller one to use and contributes to the overall diversity of the network
