#Cooperative advocates who are also into DAOs: can you provide me with at least one (ideally more) example of a DAO that is 1) doing something cool and useful; 2) has at least a bit of a track record; and 3) couldn't be done in some way that does not rely on the blockchain.I've been looking for examples that fit this description and have come up with nothing. @ntnsndr @Stacco or somebody help me out here?

@Stacco @GuerillaOntologist @ntnsndr https://topshelfrecords.co/sone/Sone from top shelf records comes to mind. A project attempting to solve for fractional royalties (?) for streaming music, a problem of great interest to a record label. Most things that can be explained in words could be done without the blockchain - but current music streaming is pretty untransparent, the blockchain would definitely help here.

@Literally @Stacco @GuerillaOntologist @ntnsndr but why would the blockchain help? You could either open up the streaming data, or use tools to self host / stream (or in groups). I'm not saying these are any more easy technically etc but blockchain does not necessarily open up streaming transparency? I've been dancing around the royalties thing for the last few years on the Creative passport thing, everytime someone pitched in with a blockchain solution you can find alternatives

@geocontrol @Stacco @GuerillaOntologist @ntnsndr if I’m a record company putting my streaming data on the blockchain, I could consider that iopening up the streaming data. I will also be extra careful with it since it’s a distributed third party, so I can’t hide the past. If I take my stuff down, someone else can build on my records on the blockchain and see what happened. There are always going to be alternatives - just like alternatives to ActivityPub but here we are.

@Literally @geocontrol @Stacco @ntnsndr But if a blockchain is just one solution of multiple alternatives, why would we not choose one of the other alternatives that doesn't rely on using a ton of electricity (PoW), or doesn't result in increasing wealth inequality (PoS), and isn't tied in to an ecosystem that is 90%+ ponzi schemes and rug-pulls? Regardless, I asked about actually existing projects, not hypothetical use-cases. I want some actual proof, not speculation.

@GuerillaOntologist @Literally @geocontrol @Stacco @ntnsndr Let’s be honest and say that the ‘decentralised’ founding values of blockchain have been wildly and successfully amplified to the status of alternative ‘way of life’, further juiced by the promise of financial returns. So blockchain provides energy. The differentiator is hype.Great for raising finance as a short term marketing exercise vs a coop - eg buying a copy of the US constitution. 1/2

@GuerillaOntologist @Literally @geocontrol @Stacco @ntnsndr but when the hype wears off DAO’s tend to resemble ‘boring’ off-chain institutions - and it becomes easier to ask the question as to why blockchain is needed in the first place. 2/2

@ntnsndr @amonle @Literally @geocontrol @Stacco All I'm looking for is the name of a project, an example, so I know what a "good" version of a DAO looks like. That seems to be hard to come by, which only increases my skepticism, tbh.

@GuerillaOntologist @ntnsndr @Literally @geocontrol @Stacco We’re probably arriving at the conclusion that blockchain is ‘interesting’ but not ‘necessary’. Take FWB & Gitcoin - well run & known DAO’s. If you erased blockchain could they still function? The answer is yes & some of the things that they do would be simpler. It’s sort of like Meta spending billions to achieve legs when we already have them in the real world. A resource hog that is ‘interesting’ but not ‘necessary’.
