The posts that show up on my "home" feed seem to have a real lag. They are always several hours old. When I click on the names of the Mastodon users in the feed, I see that they have posted more recently than the ones in my feed. What is causing this or what am i doing wrong? (Is Mastodon not suitable for realtime posts, like rapid-reloading commentary by people following along the same political debate or sports game or whatever?)

@charlie_savage I’m new, but my home is set to slow- and I update by refreshing manually (pulling down the screen) and they update and are current

@charlie_savage apologies if that’s overly obvious- yes it could also be your server

@charlie_savage It may be due to the server you're on. I first signed up on sdf.org and saw the same behavior; migrated to masto.ai last night & the difference is like night & day.

@charlie_savage it's probably just the instance you're on being overloaded with new members. They're catching up but it's taking a while

@charlie_savage It does seem that some servers are groaning under the load of new users. The hope is that admins are doing some load balancing behind the scene. I'm trying to reserve judgement until things shake out.

@charlie_savage I'm not seeing that, for the most part. I can see posts in my home feed that are from just a few minutes ago. It could be a server "overload" issue -- as so many people are joining, the admins are working hard to keep up. That should even out over time, I think.

@charlie_savage your server is either getting slammed with traffic or rebuilding its database

@charlie_savage I believe this may have to do with your home Mastodon server. My first server was slow and outdated. Now I'm on a superfast server where everything speeds along and the software is updated. Federated does not appear to mean equal.

@charlie_savage My impression Charlie from other posts in recent days here is that the lag is a result of the massive/rapid explosion of use of the site - a problem anticipated to resolve over time as the inundated tech folks here catch up with demand.

@charlie_savage As I understand it, most of the current Mastodon delays are caused by hypergrowth. Lots of $70/month servers are falling over and getting upgraded to $200/month servers, and lots of volunteer admins are staying up half the night. But lots of users are also chipping in to help, often financially but sometimes in other ways.So normally, Maston is faster, I think. It's just that you can't grow 100+% in two weeks without some strain!

@charlie_savage From the posts I’ve seen from the Mastodon administrators they are working on the delays and other problems. They were overwhelmed with many new users in a short period of time. The #TwiiterMigration has been great, but difficult. Also they hopefully will be updating the app soon, which should help. If you know all this already, then never-mind.😊

@charlie_savage This is likely due to the instance you're on, specifically. Like most online systems, posts are buffered into queues.

@charlie_savage how slammed is your home instance with new people? The server hamsters can only do so much to keep up if there’s just too many people. This will probably resolve soon, but you could check and see if the local admin needs anything if you want to help it resolve faster.

@charlie_savage do not recognize the issue. Either an app issue, where it doesn’t update (maybe you have to do it manually?) or possibly a server issue. Is your server swamped, can’t deal with the load? Maybe change server then

@charlie_savage this is likely an issue with your mastodon instance not having the resources to scale the database properly. Donate to @dcid or buy him a cup of coffee and talk about it with him.Because the service is federated, your experience will vary wildly from instance to instance as far as performance and moderation. If your instance has a good sysadmin running it or is very small, you will have a great experience and it will be a real-time service ala #birdsite

@charlie_savage It should be better now.We had some issues scaling , but it is running better now.We used to get a couple hundred new users per month and are getting that per hour since last week.
