@theblessing When i was younger i thought 1984 was great and somewhat loathed brave new world…now that im older i see a lot more of brave new world having come true in attitudes towards sex, class, media, family and abortion…and the seemingly corny (at the time) savage who taught himself english on shakespeare is the “literally me” of many people #onhere…as long handmaid’s tale doesnt make the list we cant go wrong

@Frondeur they really go hand in hand to encapsulate a LOT of the bullshit of modern society. my problem with ABNW is pretty much everything from new mexico onward. i appreciate what huxley wanted to show with the savage, i just felt novel-wise, it wasn’t particularly gripping after the first half with all the world building was SO fascinating.

@Frondeur @theblessing I think both Brave New World and 1984 make very salient points but also miss some. A book incoporating the most accurate points from both would just be a dissertation about the present day.

@theblessing Downton Abbey? LoL! It is not a tame read at all. It is very very intense and there is a lot of violence in it. It is a cautionary tale. The TV series on HULU continues the story after the book...the book was adapted to be season 1, everything after that is new content only available by watching the TV show. Which of course, I highly recommend. Season 5 finale was last night.

@Frondeur @theblessing both Orwell and Huxley were members of the occultic British socialist Fabian Society (founded by Aleister Crowley btw) and they wrote their books as pro-socialism propaganda to gloat over what would be done to their nation's grandchildren. Huxley in particular had a lot of glow connections in British intelligence and his brother Julian was made the head of the UN education council after WW2. Huxley's later personal experimentation with drugs was even probably part of the early stages of mkultra.

@theblessing Lord of the Flies i loved because it reduces itself to a microcosm of humanity when dystopia tends to go for the grand scale of lifea story focusing on how maladaptive behaviours form, like a cautionary tale your parents would tell you rather than simply rebranding the history of the USSR

@Heil_Honkler @theblessing I noticed this a while back and I've been sort of apathetic towards everything since it dawned on me. We don't live in either the Orwellian nightmare or the Huxlian nightmare but an amalgamation of both at the single worst points.we have the government controls info along with a sea of useless infowe have the "do as we order or we hurt you" along with "these drugs will make you happy"we have the "there is no government conspiracy" along with the "ON THE NEXT BIG BROTHER STACEY GIVES A HANDJOB TO BILLY IN THE RECORDING ROOM!"it's the worst mixture of both.

@AbNormal @doorroo @sekuhara i like that it’s handled with kid gloves, and maybe will make some kids be a little more conscious of “the system” in general. i think it’s a unique book and the world building is quite strong. but it’s definitely not the best on this list imho.

@HardLight @Heil_Honkler @theblessing I think that if they'd waited another generation, they could have quietly implemented Brave New World and most people wouldn't have even noticed.

@theblessing Brave new world has good ethical implications beyond "beware, we're gonna become a dystopia".I gotta shout out Snow crash because it's recently become current events in more ways than one.

@AbNormal @doorroo @theblessing i think i read one sequel. dont remember if it was decent or not, that was way too long ago. i wanna say it was just more of the same, a bit more worldbuilding and mc became a receiver as well as a giver or something like that. it wasn't as suited for classroom material.

@Jazzy_Butts @theblessing No, because you can be a low caste member and get all the drugs and feelings with no freedom and still be forced to lie about what's in front of your eyes for basic necessities. In Brave New World, everyone got soma, children were trained in erotic games because everyone had to belong to everyone else. There was no individual love for who you would live or die for, no families or pregnancy. Complete detachment from the small animal groups that enabled our survival as human reproduction was done via machines that would literally help make people stupider so that they wouldn't be able to challenge and move out the caste. Like an ant colony. Also women are people.Women are not a resource to extract, asshole. Brave New world is consumption as escape from tyranny and 1984 is isolation and authoritarianism with out right authoritative denial of the very tyranny that oppresses him. It destroys love and family via psychological means without using technology because it's not developed yet.

@Jazzy_Butts @Fullycaffeinated @theblessing You are an asshole because you want women to be considered a resource for the proles, asshole. Women are not a public resource for a socialist regime. They didn't even factor into your view of people and it makes me exhausted.

@Jazzy_Butts @theblessing @angryandignored I've called you no names, just asked a question. Call me whatever you like, it really changes nothing to my life.To get back to the point, replacing women with machines takes the humanity out of being humans and reduces children to a commodity. It is not something to strive for and would probably have a disastrous impact in the synthetically-created offspring.

@Jazzy_Butts @Fullycaffeinated @theblessing I'm usually nice...[but my opinion is that in fiction women aren't people even in dystopian novels, they merely exist to trick men who have an imperative for sex but also in another fiction everyone having orgies is totally more rewarding because even though it's detached and nonintimate, I like the idea of orgies] I mean in each novel there's a totalitarian government preventing any sort of bond between two people. When was the last time you read Brave New World? Do you not understand how going through the motions with no deep connections is depicted as isolating? Oh wait, you probably just imagine orgasming a lot and I suppose since 1984 had a government that wanted to destroy the orgasm, that's why you disliked it.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @sekuhara @theblessing @AbNormal i never got around to reading the literature of Christopher in full, i liked the sort of 'triumph of will' theme that peered through his idea of dysthymic change.Fahrenheit wasn't necessarily in a reality i think in, it was more that similar feel of a slumbering resistance triumphing against undesirable odds that appealed to me.

@Frondeur @theblessing Oryx and Crake was a better book by Atwood. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oryx_and_CrakeAlso I live in handmaid's tale but it's less about forced sex to reproduce because of a religion after a nuclear war where Canada is the savior of Americans and more forced submitting because of a religion during a communications war where I think Canada is the advertisement for idiot Americans. So instead of Christianity fucking over women, it's Terasem fucking over women and most men are all "meh" but the consumption of human flesh (no not literal cannibalism just looking for meat to experiment on) will come for men too. Besides she just copied what went on in Iran and switched out Muslim for Christian.

@Brookryn @theblessing He stole the name for his fictional religion from a black woman andhe built a shitty, creepy robot wife that is an imitation of his wife. Who is a black woman. So yeah, I don't know, it's basically colonisation repeatedly but at the same time his wife is his wife. There's an interview of her interacting with it and she seems like she's going through the motions with slight resentment while the damn thing is less effective than the chat bots that exist now. He is the man the Being John Malkovich and Get Out warned us about. It's really weird and awkward and embarrassing and surreal.Oh also I'm pretty sure he was pretending to be his grandma on the internet and pretending that she was proud of him for making a religion that was all for grinding up the lessers into a paste because we really all come from the same thing and go back to the same thing so obviously cutting up people's fine as long as they choose it. He's basically a supervillain who will never admit he's a supervillain. Also he's the reason why people compare sex segregation (you know, the stuff that stops rape and pregnancy) to racial segregation (you know that thing where people literally hated black people and also separated people based on the amount of natural sunscreen they have in their bodies) which is in my opinion irrational.

@theblessing Oryx and Crake except Atwood's an idiot who knows pig hearts are being put into people but doesn't know about the CEO of the company doing that pig and human cell shit and how he made a religion and a robot wife he wants to make believe is sentient. I guess you could put the whole he Maddaddam Trilogy on there. Whatever.
