General instance admin Q - is there any value in forcing email verification for a user these days?I think it's great for some sorts of notifications, but should it be a pre-requisite to having an account on a system?

@kinetix One problem is that if you can't verify their email, you can't give them support later. Forgotten password? Bummer.

It’s actually pretty pointless with the advent of “hide my email” services. What use is an email address when it’s a throwaway one?

The Apple “hide my email” service has started to use addresses ending with @icloud.com. Most websites will struggle with that, especially simple fedi servers…

There are really only two options.Whitelists.Only allow signups from approved domains. Which is what organizations and private servers should use.Blacklists.Deny signups from problem domains.The only domains I have blocked are those domains I can't email for whatever reason they refuse to accept email from my MX server. Even after pandering to them and kissing their feet.Fuck 'em.
