Rather than a label as previously announced, #Twitter will now have a gray checkmark available for people with clout (officials, reporters, etc.) free of charge.

@realcaseyrollins "Not all previously verified accounts will get..."This seems unintentionally wasteful. It would be a switch of some db records ultimately and each represents some level of work by Twitter to verify someone. Why throw that work away unless you wish to pick and choose...

@RileyNorman They've always been picking and choosing, that's not new.The conflicting messaging from #Twitter about the purpose of the #TwitterBlue checkmark is confusing to me.

@realcaseyrollins @RileyNorman the choices for who has the grey check this morning are so odd. Like my local newspaper has it but not the Wall Street Journal. 🧐

@sam @tanyawillhite @RileyNorman @realcaseyrollins if I was them I would combine the badges; if an account is both official and subscribes to #TwitterBlue, it has just one, even fancier blue checkmark, with a golden chrome outline.Conveys two messages in a single graphic.

@realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world @RileyNorman @tanyawillhite @realcaseyrollins@social.freetalklive.com or we could have the badge stay there and not fire the moderation staff.

@sam @realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world @RileyNorman @realcaseyrollins@social.freetalklive.com this must be either rolling out in stages or was bungled terribly in deciding who gets what badge. Just a quick scroll showed Hillary Clinton doesn't have it, but then they briefly gave it to Jacksepticeye (and evidently removed it???). The five remaining Twitter employees and an escaped lemur from the zoo they pulled in to help seem to be a bit overwhelmed with how to make this work.
