@admin@mastodon.tech I joined in 2019 after getting tired of centralized social media and extremely spooked at their utilization as surveillance machines. Also, I was getting fascinated with self-hosted services as a new paradigm from the corporate model.

I'm a fan of alt.folklore.computers (usenet) because winner of battles write the books of history but there are many little known stories.Evan Prodromou started the software #Laconica as a alternative to #Twitter in 2008 I think, technically based on RSS feeds, XML and it was federated. Hackers and activists were enthusiastic. #identi.ca was the main instance run by Evan. In 2009 a conference was held in Hamburg, Germany: #microblogging conference (#mbc09) where the future was looking bright. There was even a conference named "bear hug" where Twitter managers were invited. Discussion: about a universal protocol for microblogging. Twitter retracted, with dollar signs in their eyes.I assume Evan wasn't technically satisfied with his solution, also his servers generated a lot of costs. He started totally new with JSON as message format and switched from PHP to node.js. Unfortunately a lot of users were lost with this migration to a new platform. Laconica was then known as status.net and later(?) as GNU Social.

@admin pleroma.soykaf.com was the first pleroma instance iirc, it's run by the main dev. I just made my own instance at some point, that's where i'm now. I only use my soykaf account when netzsphäre is down

@admin I really like it. It's like a cross between a chatroom and MSN messenger, when things were cleaner and clearer, but you might not be old enough to have experienced early internet. I left social media when it got too antisocial a few years ago.

@admin I switched to fix a bug someone was experiencing and so far there where no complaints.It works, not a fan of quote posts tbh and idk about emoji reacts but performance has maybe improved a bit?
