If you didn't want your posts to be available to the general public don't post publicly

Now that it looks like that #Mastodon is really taking off thanks to the inevitable decline of the Birdsite, I think the #Fediverse should already think about what to do when (and it's more a when than an if) a known Big Brother company creates a commercial open instance. I think such instances pose a clear and present existential threat to the Fediverse and should be ruthlessly defederated. What do you think would be the best solution?

If you made the post public, you consented. You wanted it to be read, and shared, and retweeted/boosted.Adding in a stipulation like "I only want it read by HTTP client software that is part of the Fediverse" doesn't work.It would also mean that we have to support ridiculous things like that guy being sued for "hacking" because he read the source code of the webpage and personal info was embedded in the HTML. (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/10/viewing-website-html-code-is-not-illegal-or-hacking-prof-tells-missouri-gov/)

Also Fediverse doesn't 100% work like email. Your posts are not explicitly delivered to every recipient. A lot of the consumers fetch it from your server.e.g.A makes a post and mentions BB replies to AC follows B, but not AC sees B replied to A in their timeline, but doesn't have the post A made.C fetches the post directly from A to complete the thread

@feldRight but my point is that if Google or another Big Brother company were to scrape info out of the Fediverse for whatever commercial purpose they might have for it now, that would clearly be a wrong thing. If Google sets up one of the largest Mastodon instances in the Fediverse, it would not be quite so wrong anymore. And this is only one of the many reasons why we should be weary of commercially operated Mastodon instances. @void @raucao

I understand your concern, but what good is the Fediverse if it's completely opaque? Don't you want regular users to search for something on Google/Bing and find a very interesting thread that meets their search criteria and encourages them to join the Fediverse?
