@gretathunberg Absolutely they do. As I wrote after the floods here in Australian in March - these fossil fuel companies are projected to export more than $379bn worth of oil and gas by June this year. According to research from Market Forces, as many as sixty-two of these companies paid no tax in 2019-20.As we process the magnitude of these floods, while still trying to make sense of the black summer fires, it is clear that we are going to need significant resources to manage the ongoing, rolling crises that will define our lives in the decades to come. As these impacts become more and more frequent, we need to organise around the idea that those responsible for the climate crisis must pay for the mess they have made. https://overland.org.au/2022/03/make-the-fossil-fuel-companies-pay/

@gretathunberg @gretathunberg To the poorest states of the world, all of us are billionaires. I think it’s easy to point at billionaires and say: IT’S THEIR FAULT! It is true that they have a higher responsibility and not all of them meet act accordingly. But it is also true that all of us are accountable for the climate. @gretathunberg there are ~3300 billionaires in the world. So that amounts to another 3.3bn average people living on the planet. Also, billionaires' emissions contribute to the emissions of an average person. So it's probably marginally more than that 3.3bn that we calculated.

@gretathunberg They are counting “investment emissions”, i.e. all the pollution these people cause to happen. I think this is a useful lens through which to judge our own activity. It’s not just about our direct pollution but also the pollution that we pay others to emit for us whenever we buy something or make an influencing decision.

@gretathunberg They are talking about the investments of these billionaires. The actual emitters are everybody using the products and services that their companies provide, including some who strongly oppose any regulation or taxation of those products and services.Besides, if governments take the necessary actions to address the climate crisis, it will take money, and billionaires will contribute much more to the solution than the average person.

This amount of carbon is a drop in the ocean compared to global industrial emissions as a whole, but if the SpaceX’s plan for a rocket launch every two weeks comes to fruition, this amount of carbon (approximately 4,000 tonnes per year) will rapidly become a bigger problem."https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/spacex-environmentally-responsible-180968098/

@gretathunberg This type of statement may suggest that, without the ~3,000 billionaires currently in the world, global emissions would be almost halved. In fact, without them, the companies they own would be owned by smaller shareholders, governments or communities, and produce exactly the same things. So there would be no change in emissions. For instance, Venezuelan oil companies have been public since 1976, but that hasn't changed the way they operate.

@gretathunberg However, when these people are biggest emitters, they should be more motivated to reduce pollution instead of being accused to be the biggest polluters. The ladder might lead to a defiant reaction rather than a quick development towards a more sustainable living of all people. This is desirable for all of us.

@gretathunberg Maybe it’s because they are jetsetting to their various worldwide holdings and making sure that people stay employed? There’re not that many billionaires in the world, comrade.

@gretathunberg Sorry, I must be very stupid, but can anyone explain to me why being a billionaire is allowed at all? Does anyone believe any person deserved a few 1000 times as much as a nurse or policeman or fire-fighter or ...Before we have a chance to achieve #climatejustice we urgently need to change the whole system into something acceptable! The way it currently works, it's simply a huge affront!

@gretathunberg "We know which ones we need to hold accountable for the climate crisis." The only way to save the climate is to destroy capitalism in a world socialist revolution.

@gretathunberg Greta, it’s great to see you on Mastodon. Hope more of the climate community comes over here. PS, I’m in awe of your advocacy, and if you ever want to tour bike lanes of Washington DC, I’m one of the people who gets to design and install them and can provide tour routes of interest.

Hello Greta, big fan of what you did to andrew tate. Don't you find it interesting that billionaires such as Larry Fink invent things like "ESG" to simultaneously push social agendas and shield themselves from environmentalist criticism while actually doing nothing to help the environment?

@gretathunberg Normalise seeing all #Billionaires and #OnePercenters as the sleazy, grabbing criminals that they are and not as the heroes their PR departments paint them to be. #TheGrabbingHands
