@bacigalupe For my part, on my smol server, people can use it how they want; if it slows down or falls over, oh well. I don't want to dampen anyones enthusiasm.I don't know the specific bottlenecks on the giant instances.Twitter had the fail whale every five minutes at the beginning, didn't stop it growing!

@john so far I'm *kind of* managing to keep the situation under control on my instance with a more aggressive `tootctl <media|preview_cards> remove` policy - running the cronjob more often, and removing anything older than 3 days.But even with this policy I've got a 10 GB database dump, and the live-web Docker image is around 7 GB - meaning mostly filled with media stuff posted/viewed just in the last 3 days (!!)And I've also been careful in associating only to relay servers that don't push a lot of traffic from a lot of instances, otherwise the situation would be more dramatic.I think it's time that admins start to be a bit less shy about asking users to donate to keep the lights on. #ElonMusk was planning to turn #Twitter profitable, but so far the only one who is likely to see a lot more profit is probably #Linode, thanks to all the nodes being upgraded in these days.

@bernieb He literally can't, Mastodon is made up of thousands of independent websites that use an open protocol. As people flood in from Twitter to these thousands of sites we're having to beef-up out capacity, and it's happening very fast, but we'll do it!

@elmgren An $8 VPS won't get you very far in terms of active users I'm afraid. Some of the large instances now have hundreds of thousands of active users. And many have tens of thousands.And keep in mind that nearly all of Mastodon is run by volunteers using crowd-funding or paying out of pocket.If you've got the technical skills, I'd encourage you to run one! It's better if Mastodon scale horizontally than vertically.

I run an instance for people into palaeontology, and the user experience I provide them is a 1) somewhere to sign up where they know some people, 2) paying the server costs (relevant to this meme), 3) banning people from elsewhere that act like jerks 4) helping them find their way around a little.

@Bergdahl Pretty much every server with open signups has had to double or quadruple in size in the last week or so, including mine. So this is a personal experience meme, aimed at other people like me seeing the wave come in. Mastodon is made up of thousands of people like me, voluntarily running servers that people can mostly use for free. Railing against it as a monolith makes no sense. I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated with Mastodon, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.
