@RelayOne @stephenfry I'd probably recommend against watching this one, Stephen. The video's creator was part of Kiwifarms (a website that solely exists to organise online harassment) and is urging users to use Mastodon instead of Parler.

@stephenfry I recommend just making posts you like. Overall, I think most people overthink it.I'd also suggest a less censorious instance. Your server blocks a lot of good people for bogus reasons.

Dabbling in KISS Linux has been quite enjoyable, if surprisingly challenging. For picking about on Linux all I really need is a terminal and a Browser, and that's just what you get. Firefox would not build without a patch which I had to dig around for, and there were one or two other things, but generally a positive experience.

Toughest part was kernel compilation. I am completely out of practice with it and It took a bloody age to get it right. KISS discourages an initrd philosophically, so you have to have all your drivers compiled in, which defeats my usual hack of 'just use Slackware's config'.

One really big tip: the search bar on your Mastodon dashboard can be used to pull in remote things. People do this for two use-cases:You can copy and paste any URL to a post on the fediverse, and throw it into your search bar. Your server will pull it in and focus on it, so that you can interact with it.Every user has what is called a “handle”, which looks a bit like an email address. The format is user@domain.tld. In my case, my handle is sean@social.deadsuperhero.com. Every profile has this thing on it - you can throw that into your search bar, and it will pull up my profile. It’s a very easy way to follow people. In the few edge cases where it fails to load, you can pull in a post instead, then click on their avatar to load the profile manually.

a good way to use the fedi is to find journos/celebs/pedophiles (pretty heavy overlap there) fleeing the pan to join us in the fire, and then threaten them with execution and/or penetration depending on their genitals and transgressions

Well, if you have a moment I certainly would like to know more - how these servers work etc. I don’t even know how to sign in from another device (iPad for instance) as I seem to have signed in originally on an iPhone without somehow paying attention to how I did it!
