PSA:There's Politics happening a few places around the world right now. Please, /please/, place all political posts behind a content warning. It's actually in our Code of Conduct as a strong suggestion, but if we see anyone posting heavy political content frequently and without a CW, we will 'limit' the account (at the very least) so that the post don't show up on the public timeline.Be considerate of the mental health of your online neighbours. :bear_hugs:

@Curator as a person who works in politics, I absolutely love to see this. it’s exhausting to come on social media most of the time. excited to see the difference on mastodon

@paigediana It's the established culture here for people who have been here a while that all political posts, no matter how mild, go under a CW - not just on .art but across the whole fediverse of connected servers. Obviously it's going to take the newcomers a while to learn and adopt this culture but I like gently reminding people ^.^

@Curator @paigediana I've been hosting Masto for 4 years and I didn't know that. I don't have much hope for a newcomer.

If you think it's wise/smart/cool/edgy to reply to this with 'all art is political', entirely refusing to recognise the point and spirit in which this post was made, I'll remove your ability to see all of the cute, astonishing, inspiring, whimsical, beautiful 'political' art from here.

Expanded info:Usually when people are talking about politics, no matter how mild, whether it's personal commentary on current events or a link to an article, it's placed behind a content warning that will read something like "USPOL, -" USPOL stands for US politics, and you can use a + or - to show whether the nature of your post is positive or negative. A lot of people enjoy reading political commentary but won't boost it if it doesn't have a CW. It's not censorship, it's consideration.

@Curator If someone's account is "limited", will this be visible to the person?

@Curator But what is "political" in the spirit, this post was made? Portraits of politicians? Caricature of politicians? Editorial Cartoons? Bold statements like in some print I saw on Insta with the text "women just want to have fun(damental rights)?"A reminder to vote? Who am I to judge, if something is hurting the mental health of my online naighbours? Should all the art disappear behind CWs?

@MartinLeurs "Who am I to judge, if something is hurting the mental health of my online neighbours?"Exactly this. You're not, so if you want to be safe and not judge people on the things that upset them, you put everything connected to politics behind a political content warning.

@Curator That sounds like a good solution at first, but in the long run it would mean that there would be a warning on every picture. Food, politics, animals, insects, body, beauty, illness, death, family, violence, birth, baby, nudity, ...And you would never know whether behind "violence" there is a huge slaughter or an image that has only remotely to do with violence.Consequently, the ALT text would have to be displayed first and then everyone could make a conscious decision based on that.

@MartinLeurs @Curator You are not limited to writing one word (or one line) in the CW field. You can e.g. write "violence: gore and severed limbs"

@Anke @Curator Yeah, or I write: A women gets hit by two men, you see no blood, but tears ...Then I need a CW for my CW. I totally agree, that there is a place for CWs if you post something extreme, but I don't see a benefit of putting a CW on every image with a detailed description, what to expect. Every piece of art may hurt somebody for very personal reasons and I think there is no way to prevent this except we don't post anything.

@MartinLeurs if you ever disagree with mastodon.art's policies then there are other servers that are more lax about this stuff. in fact, the instance i'm on is soon gonna allow registrations by invite. but if you want, you can see whether you can get used to the rules there. nothing wrong with having choices

@Curator You guys spent the last couple of months advertizing this here as an alternative to Twitter. I hate to break it to you, but pretty much everyone looking for an alternative is a political activist of some kind. If political content is essentially unwelcome here then Mastodon is simply not a platform for organizing. In which case, it would be fair if you communicated that clearly.

@MaryNeedsNoHail A) I'm not 'you guys'. I have not spent the last couple of months advertising 'this here' as an alternative to Twitter.B) "please content warn political posts" is very *very* different to "political posts aren't welcome". Political posts are ABSOLUTELY welcome. We just ask that people CW them. It is a significant difference that is purposefully ignored by people who think we're trampling their free speech.

@Curator If Mastadon is not a political space because every political post must come with a warning, then what is its purpose in the public space?
Politics is about people discussing how they can live together. It’s something that dictatorships hate and actively silence. We need to talk politics.

@jethomas You misread 'Please content warn your political posts' as 'please don't post politics'. They are very different things.
