I know that my perspective is just this guy’s opinion — but it’s not an uncommon one on social media or in daily life.An op-ed contributor working at the NYT for Dean Bacquet does not become untethered from that world when they leave Twitter for Mastodon. That person is still — in the eyes of lots of folks — part of the problem.Does that make sense?

What’s my point? I’m not trying to discourage journalists from being here. Nor do I mean to imply that the work of journalists isn’t welcome here — It very much is, at least for my part.It’s the idea of a by-approval-only instance whose membership is limited to “legit/employed/popular” journalists that rubs people the wrong way — because wearing the domain as a “blue check mark” feels a lot like preserving Twitter’s caste system.

In practical terms, and to directly answer the question @adamdavidson asked: creating an exclusive private instance for a class of professionals is a double-edged sword. While it does allow for richer internal interaction and some level of “self-signed” legitimacy, it also makes you very easy to silence and/or block as a group.

From my own perspective I see increasingly polarized news coverage where opposition is increasingly mentioned only to create a target to beat upon rather than a dialogue to find common ground; very different from what you are describing.

@josh the fediverse brings something incredibly valuable into the equation: consequences and new talent. if people lost trust they can just look elsewhere for a more reasonable take or a fresh perspective. traditional journalism actively deters that.
