Ive started digging into the Writefreely code, and reading the forums, and realized they are implementing built in gopher and gemini servers into Writefreely. Gopher is already functioning, but it needs formatting work.Pretty much what this means is it will be one site to rule them all. An http/gemini/gopher site which also federates through activity pub. Kind of amazing.

@tomasino I think its a ways out. The gopher formatting needs help. I think gemini is still in the experimental phase. But they are working on it. Enabling gopher is as simple as changing 'gopher_port = 0' to 'gopher_port = 70'And they have to be doing something clever as Writefreely is running behind a reverse proxy.

@atyh i just threw the news at my gopher and Gemini IRC communities. Tomorrow I'll do some writing about it and drum up a bunch of motivated coders. Best news of the day!

@atyh Interesting! I've never used Gopher, and I haven't even heard about the protocol for years. Does it have a place on the modern internet?

@vilcans this question is entirely too subjective to answer. though i would say that the “modern” internet with its trappings of mass surveillance, resource inefficiency, unnecessarily bloated code, and endless advertising is the very reason gopher has seen a resurgence, and gemini came into being.

@vilcans Not sure it needs one.It might just be different, and less populated. But to answer your question, speed, weight, simplicity, hierarchical structure, no advertising infrastructure built around it, no surveillance capitalism built around it.Complete lack of normie consumer mind in the community around it. Users tend to be older, thoughtful, intelligent. Its people centric. No one goes to Gopher to be famous or promote their "merch". They go there because they like obscure tech, and conversation. Less formal. The things which caused it to lose out to http are its advantages... you cant serve adds, and you cant stream porn.

@atyh That's cool. I thought it was more of a file download protocol with a menu system, like originally a replacement for ftp maybe, not people-centric.

@vilcans technically it is. or was. but what something becomes is largely determined by who uses it. It was thrown away by the corporate world. but picked up by people.

@atyhDoes this mean you'll be hosting duplicates of the same content under different protocols? Is this going to be a site accessible through http, Gooher, and Gemini all with the same content, or is it something else?
