       Just went on a walking tour with the new director of SDOT, Greg Spotts. It was pretty good, he seemed to be having ideas and be fully onboard with what we were saying. Roosevelt has experienced a lot of growth, with a Link station, schools, and incredible density, and the future of our streets should be for local residents rather than an I5 alternative.

       Greg has a sticker from transit.supply on the back of his phone. He commented on how these bike lanes reduce the speeds on a road near a park, which improves the experience of people using the park too.

       You’ll notice this group was very white, male, and older. That’s definitely a problem and is something we talked about. I believe I was the youngest and only renter, aside from Greg himself. Hopefully Greg hears from a greater variety of voices in the future for our neighborhood and others. I also hope he goes to the south end and does more walking tours there.

       At the end of the tour, he commented on the new intersection in east Green Lake, and how it is clearly designed to prioritize walking and biking over car throughput. He contrasted that to the intersections in dense Roosevelt, which are designed mainly for the cars. I appreciated that insight.

       I get some of the negative flak he’s gotten, but I don’t think someone who only was providing lip service to safe streets would have been as insightful on the issues as he was. He mentioned trying to change culture in our government and within the agency.
