@CatButtes My understanding is that server load comes from federating off-server. A noteable Mastodon-er with a private dedicated server noted that he’s needing to paying ~$50 per month for a dedicated machine and his following is ‘only’ in the thousands.

@ben Ooof. I knew Mastodon wasn't light, but I didn't have it down as that heavy in my mind! I think @tek is running Free Radical on a 4GB Digital Ocean droplet - but he may have offloaded stuff like media in a way that others haven't done if they aren't as technical...
