Fascinating -- journa.host (and I assume other Mastodon servers as well) has a list of servers that it won't accept messages from, and the reason why (hate speech, trolling, etc.) "No data from these servers will be processed, stored or exchanged, making any interaction or communication with users from these servers impossible"

@mathewi Yeah, once word got out that there was a server for journalists, we all started getting attacked with really vile stuff on Saturday night before Adam & co. blocked the servers it was coming from. The fact that they were able to block entire servers of trolls on our behalf so quickly was, for me, the moment when I "got" the fediverse, and realized that this was going to be where I spend my time instead of Twitter.

@mathewi This is one of the features of federated services, but should be used sparingly. Just like banning an email domain blocks spam and legitimate messages alike, banning an instance silences the legitimate alongside the nuisances. Ideally, each user should maintain their own blocks and mutes as each individual has tolerances that differ from the instance admin. I don't like for other people to decide what's best for me; I'm an adult and can manage that myself.

@captain @mathewi the tools for individual management of moderation aren't good enough yet. But I do want to see such tools developed.

@mathewi As I understand it it's the main way of moderating an instance. It's basically disabling the federation with certain servers

@fragabaglio Yes, I find it very interesting -- one of the benefits of a federated network!

@mathewi @fragabaglio yes but if you use it too heavily you may just create a new walled garden. Individual accounts can also choose to mute or block accounts or even whole instances at an account level (pleroma has this. I think mastodon does as well). As a general rule instance wide bans should be used for the safety of the server (don't allow cp to hit your server for example). Some admins choose this path because of an individual user issue which over time leads to large parts of the fediverse not being able to see one another.

@mathewi We should all be careful. Mastodon hasn’t yet been subjected to the degree of manipulation that big time political actors can bring to the table, with resources and staff. The architecture will be tested soon.If left-liberal donors were smart they’d pay for infosec teams now.
