The new "All Quiet on the Western Front" on Netflix is excellent and harrowing, but it was a false note in the beginning for the school principal to give that nationalist rah-rah speech to cheering teenage recruits in 1917. Felt like a scene from 1914, when everyone naively thought the war would be glorious and then quickly over, and long before the German army had to start recycling uniforms from the dead at an industrial scale as the opening scene showed.

@charlie_savage Sound design was incredible. They should win awards on that alone. I haven’t read the book so I don’t know how closely it aligns, but the ending was a real gut punch.

@charlie_savage I agree. They were deep into war socialism by 1917, and the populace was practically living on turnips. The rah rah days were long gone by then.
