Idk how long anyone else has kept watermelon, but this was almost a month old when I cut into it, and still good & sweet. Tbf, this was roughly a week ago, but pretty amazing to be having homegrown watermelon nearly in November.

@collatz I grew some watermelons this year but they didn't come out very good at all and left them for the deer instead. Any tips or seed suggestions? They grew fine but just weren't sweet

@Pisek A lot of things can factor into that. I had a couple that weren't really top-notch myself this year. One of the first, and ime most reliable things is making sure you wait until the tendril directly opposite the stem of the fruit dries off completely, and maybe even give it a couple extra days beyond. Even then they can be less than stellar, just owing to things like soil fertility, sufficiency of sunlight, or the weather slowing the whole plant down. I've heard mixed things about availability of water, but some of the sweetest I've grown were in a year where our clay soil tended to stay relatively dry and the weather was particularly hot. Take that for what it's worth, I've only grown them for two seasons now.

@collatz We've got rich soil, plenty of nutrients but I'll be doing a test before planting in spring. The area we plant them has a swale near it so they get a lot of water so I'll look at moving them a little further from it. I didn't know about the tendril part falling off for timing the harvest, appreciate the tips!

@Pisek Well, I've never seen them fall off, go from green to dried.

@collatz Ah I misread that as dry and fall off, gotcha just dried out Do you get your seeds online or locally? I was looking at a website someone recommended but can't recall at the moment. I was also looking to go through a big seed company for our sweet corn to get the supersweet stuff

@Pisek Both. Sometimes when I see a seed rack, I'll check it out, but there are things I can only find online. I do use places like Gurney's and Johnny's, but yeah more when I've had recommendations that don't show up elsewhere.
