In fairness: I chose to start an edgy server. Many people choose to block this server because of that. That is their prerogative, I don't actually disagree with that! I can't communicate with large parts of the network because of my choice. Sometimes that is frustrating but ultimately I made the right choice for me because I needed a place where I could speak my mind without the constant worry and self-censorship which really does create stress and psychological burden for me.

@rats it could be because even just one or two aggressive people can get you on a list (understandable, we have them) or you can see it as what the impact of other servers blindly following blocklists is. we get blocked a lot by default.

A tad ridiculousI don't know how new you are all on the fediverse, but back then, when these big blocklists were made, a lot of people got put into these with 0 admin contacts or on the slightest of bad post potentially seen. It's not solely because of strong moderation either, but also the infamous "all my friends are here" effect. So they're whining about the wrong internet daddy being in charge of the website, but the true reality is they will never leave for another website without moderation as strong as Twitter, and then they'll do it when their friends do. They see people moving to Mastodon as something people complain about weekly before they inevitably come back, or they see the bad messaging from the Mastodon Network marketers and how boring most instances are, and come back.Or worse, they'll only join an instance based on vague identifiers like "is XYZ for trans people only". I wish I was joking, but I saw someone on a Telegram group whining about feeling isolated and all years back, and then only wanted to join trans related groups. Said person who wanted a moderated community was thrown out of the group for hurling insults at people which is a no-no in a moderated community (if you're not in charge of course).

One of the things Akkoma did differently from a fork that the person I mentioned was promoting was that Akkoma is made by both people in the fediverse, and it adds at least one feature people want (custom emoji reacts). I feel it needs to definitely take on an identity of it's own IMO if it wants to stand out however. Maybe in a few months to a year it will. But there was a fork the ex-Pleroma dev I mentioned promoted that fizzled out for that reason: it literally did nothing different and was "pleroma without Alex" (before he got thrown out), and no devs moved over. People aren't running Alexes code because of his politics as much as they are running it because it's serving a similar purpose as Qvitter did in the GNU Social days; to provide a polished UI as opposed to the turd that was GNU Social's UI. SPC ran Qvitter back in the day and so did many right wing instances, but Qvitter was literally developed by classic online socialists. Nobody gave a shit about their politics because it was serving a purpose. Pleroma's interface is nowhere near as bad as that of GNU Social's, but it has many people who aren't fans of it and Soapbox has gotten people who usually struggle on this side of the web into it. If anything Soapbox + Rebased has a feature people keep begging yearly for in Mastodon: Quote posts. It's controversial, but it's funny how Twitter refugees keep wanting a feature that's only in the fedi instance developed by the bad person. Plus if Soapbox really starts implementing truly shitty features, anyone can fork it. It's probably possible to fork it and say, adding in custom emoji reacts on top of using any emoji reacts as opposed to a few. That's just one example mind you. I also think as more trans and left wing instances run Soapbox (I know a few do), either as a "fuck you" to Alex or because they like the interface, the stigma will fade like with Pleroma. I'm not joking, there were times when people wanted to block out Pleroma instances from the fedi for the same reason.I'm just gonna say this; there's a reason not even Oracle could kill OpenOffice and OpenSolaris.
