Why do you want to make a different social media platform just like twitter? Many of us were cast out from twitter over the years too... and twitter has been a miserable experience for us. Why would you bring it with you to us when we wanted to escape it? You are defending twitter culture which is toxic and exploits people for advertisers, branding and corporations. A lot of its practices encourage ragebaiting, the algo feeds this. I don't need random people coming into my threads to tell me that they have blocked me which is what started my rant. I don't need to know. This is just toxic behaviour passed to us. If someone must block me, they can block and move on.

How can I when people from twitter have tried to report and have instances taken down? How can I when twitter users are just as bigoted as mastodon users, talking about defederating entire instances? Do you not even realise just how toxic twitter is and the people that come from it? Or how toxic your own attitude is here, do you really go to other places and not think you have to adapt to them? That is the talk of privilege. When I go to twitter, I have to adapt to that. When I go elsewhere, I have to adapt. When I joined the fediverse, I had to adapt... and when mastodon came along, apparently I had to adapt to that just like you demand I adapt to you rather than you reading the room and integrating yourselves. rebuilding a community from zero is hard. it's very hard. doubly so when your community has many people who struggle with the new tech. it's a little different this time than when the alt-right types migrated. Those people truly had nowhere to go back to, and whatever their beliefs, they were actually being persecuted for them. these newest people aren't getting banned. i've read that the moderation on twitter isn't even changing. they can go back at any time, and once the initial romance wears off and they actually need to grind out building a community, we will see their determination.

well, i don't really use twitter, so my perspective might be different.but what actually changed there? it looks to me like, not a whole lot. the blue checkmarks are being distributed in a different way. that's about it? i've heard from my japanese friends that the trending topics are more realistic. these are all really very minor changes but the twitter refugees act like there is some great persecution. i think they are being swept up in some great act of theatre.

That is what is always expected of newcomers. You are not welcome to go to a new country and keep your own rules, laws, culture, language as before. @fluffy @revmagdalen I think you are right, in that they are being swept up in an act of theatre. This is what the mainstream media likes to do. At its worse, they will have to put up with different cultures being able to come back to use twitter. But even there, I think they will just be able to have varying opinions but still need to be polite. They may have to put up with someone like Trump but probably most people won't be able to get their account back if it was used to harass or something. Some people have already tried, although maybe a bit early on. Musk won't be able to change everything or even a lot, the things he mentioned were already on the cards if I recall. Twitter is still a bureaucratic nightmare. It won't change in any meaningful way for someone like me... except that maybe what trends they push will be different. The people behind it may be different too, even the firings were planned... but even that was spun to be more than it would actually be. There are still limitations in place. People on twitter will just get to hate Musk instead.

Organic works best for me, it doesn't end up overwhelming me. As for learning about books, I think there are better ways to learn about new books, from websites dedicated to that or the local independent book store.

The fediverse used to be more open, but over time it has become less trusting as different cultures have come here and brought the baggage from wherever they were from here. This happens with each wave of people, unfortunately. We have had people come here and claim this space is theirs, so I hope you can understand why we are more preemptive about this. Especially when people don't understand how the fediverse works and just want to turn it into twitter. Which, I know that I have at least tried to escape from. I would likely be isolated if it became like corporate twitter. You value the corporate nature of twitter from what I have seen, with the algos, the marketing, the celebrities... this is probably better placed on a centralised site like twitter for that stuff.

Personally, I don't see Nazi servers here, just people being edgy or in support of free speech... which makes sense because this is freedom software and it used to be more of the culture when I came here. Much more tech oriented with some minority groups which I adapted to in some ways. The edgy people do it because it is entertaining to them and as a filter for people who would try to police them. So you'll see a lot of that filtering. They will post at people trying to police them to get them to block them.

It was much more technology oriented as people would discuss software and programming (You can still see a few of them now, but I wonder if they might be a minority now). There were some minority groups, like an instance dedicated to mylittlepony. Over time, as people have been pushed out of twitter, or gab, or one of the centralised servers, it has picked up the people from those waves as they discover the fediverse for the first time, or again in some cases when people lost interest being here.

You can search the federated timeline anytime and see all sorts of new people or get introduced to them via other mutual’s posts. Why do you want someone to come in from on high to influence your searches and exposure? This is not ideal, but some people don't seem interested in curating their own experience and rely on their admins to do it for them. Yes, there are ads on it, that's how they keep the servers on, but that's the extent of corporate content on it. After that, I knew that twitter wasn't for me. It was incredibly difficult to talk to people like I would normally, it was isolating which is horrible for an isolated individual to experience there. They didn't even communicate with me about it so I knew what I did wrong there. It is policing itself. You don't get a good cross section of the public on twitter, it is mainstream and corporate. The algos encourage people to be divisive and to keep in their own bubbles. The youtube algo isn't any better with this. It baffles me why I get sent some videos when it has nothing to do with what I'm watching. But at least we can agree that the corporate side of twitter is shit. I don't want that here, and this includes the algos and corporation branding. The attitudes of entitlement from the celebrities or public figures that come with it.

It wasn't the news or brands that got me there, I just wanted a comfy space that I could interact with other people and have fun and interesting conversations with. Learn about things. But the world is so divided now, you can't really escape the politics or mainstream... people are both less trusting and less tolerant for differing views and trying to understand them. I wouldn't call it harmless, because it's not nice to get a lot of those responses. Sometimes I wonder why people respond in this way. It's not really my style and I tend to ignore most of it, like in this thread. People have their own ways of responding to things, out of my control. But I sort of understand why the filter is there... similar to when the mastodon side will filter by creating instance block lists as a filter against those types of people. There were a few times when the mastodon side did something similar to me too, back in the earlier days when they came over and tried to police instances. In fact, you mentioned about the content warnings, that happened to me. I rejected it then and I reject it now. Even got told to leave mastodon, they didn't understand I don't use mastodon too. So it is filtering from all sides, the culture clash.

On pleroma, I get to see the replies to threads that people make in my own timeline which lets me see more threads. This was also how it used to be with GNU Social, one of the reasons that I loved joining up to the fediverse when I did. I could see all the posts people make, not just the threads they made. Of course, we now have scopes which limit some things when it comes to posts so it is less open there. Not so great for moderating posts, interestingly. Your instance has to know other people in order to pick up the content from them. There isn't a way around it when it comes to decentralisation. You don't get to see everything the fediverse has to offer, makes it seems like things are more dead than they are. And people have defederated. It makes sense when it comes to illegal content or bad faith actors, less sense for other things. But there are people who want the admins to moderate their feeds for them since they are used to twitter doing this for them rather than doing it themselves. On pleroma, you can also mute entire instances at the user level. I'm not sure if mastodon has that ability. I think it is more important to empower individuals to curate their own timelines and to reach out to other people.

Oh, and if you really want to read deep into Nazism, Nazi Ideology before 1933 by Barbara Miller Lane and Leila J. Rupp is an excellent book. It's a responsible scholarly examination of early Nazi writings. In their writings you find a mixture of Volkisch mysticism, socialism and of course anti-Semitism. Now, in regards to the Nazi's supposed socialism, I really don't know how much they were socialist in practice. I think they had more of a mixed economy, perhaps like China's system today. But if you know any credible books about Nazi economics, I would love to know about them. People who hate capitalism will say the Nazis were capitalist, people who hate socialism will say they were socialist.

Are you saying that the Republicans outright banned abortion??"... etc. It's nice because you're not so much bullying them as having a discussion where it would almost normally be a "debate" if you could call it that.

But in the past, even an action like moving to get a drink and the action of drinking has helped to calm me down a bit. It gets you away from the situation that triggered the anxiety and lets you focus on doing something and then maybe enjoying something.

I would caution on the implication of using modern iterations of computerized technology to overcome perceived problems or limitations of the real world. No longer are we just at the risk of the progress causing physical injury to those in a manufacturing plant as in the technological past; in the new age the risks extend to everybody both physically and mentally. Whether that be through bad actors, or unforeseen genuine mistakes.For a further view on that perspective, I would like to recommend a thesis to you for your reading consideration. It does take an extreme view of the problems, but I think it provides useful points of consideration regarding the future of technology. It was written way back in the '70s by a recently retired Mathematics professor from Harvard, although it wouldn't see publication until the mid '90s in The Washington Post. A rare feat for a Mathematics professor, although I don't agree with his self-managed marketing campaign. The paper is called Industrial Society and Its Future by Dr Theodore Kaczynski. You can even find an audiobook version for free on youtube if you prefer that format.As I say, there is plenty in there that you may find disagreeable, but there might also be jump-off points for you to think about and discuss.
