Opinion: Normalize calling #Mastodon a social *network* instead of social media. (I'm not sure when we as a society switched over to calling platforms like this "social media" but let's take it back!)

@killyourfm The term "social network" is now also inherently connected to Facebook, due to the film of the same name. So, while it's a more accurate term, there are still annoying connotations.

@killyourfm I think by default, and by overall function, one would be required to call mastodon a social network over social media, so that's certainly how I would refer to it. Thumbs up.

@killyourfmOr better yet, call it #Fediverse because Mastodon is only 1 piece to all the things you're seeing in your Timeline. Calling this Mastodon is like calling web searching Googling, when indeed there are hundreds of search engines.

@killyourfm I think the change in lingo happened, because we wanted to emphasize the responsibility of the social media companies to moderate their platform. Media companies need to check what content they are publishing. Network operators are just providing infrastructure.By this logic each instance is social media and a social network but Mastodon and the fediverse are just a social network.

@killyourfm I never thought we stopped referring to it as a "social network". I've always seen the term "social media" as a way to refer to that whole sector of the web. Twitter, Facebook, Mastodon, Instagram, TikTok, are all part of social media, while they are each individual social networks.

@killyourfm Here in France, we have always been saying "réseaux sociaux" which when translated gives "social networks". So at school, English teachers are teaching that it's "social networks" because "social media" is the American form.
