that only applies to parliamentary systems, which the US is not. (assuming you are asking this question seriously... 🤔)

@chiasm yeah I am, I really don't understanddoesn't the opposition having a majority mean they run the place? they can pass legislation as they like, right, given they have a majority?

@izaya i don't know about US political system, but if they have separate elections for parliament and separate elections for president, then it's entirely possible to have a president and a parliament that are political opponents. And they will either find a way to cooperate, or keep fighting and blocking each other's actions.

nope nope. Officially the US has 3 branches of government--the executive branch run by the president, the legislative branch that is basically just Congress, and the judicial branch that is the Supreme Court. They were intended to be independent and keep each other under control. . The president is elected every four years. The House is elected every 2 years, and the Senate every 6 years. But the only role they play in the Presidential election was the Jan 6 role of officially certifying who won, after all the states finish counting from the November election.

@wolf480pl @izaya producing minority governments is a major weakness of presidential systems, france has the same issue this election cycle, same can also happen in mayor-council systems, like, what fun would it be to have Warsaw mayor be from PO and the council have majority PiS

@izaya because the president controls the military, and congress can't out him without a very incriminating legal reason

@wolf480pl @izaya possibly, i mean the big "issue" every muni election cycle here (mayors here are appointed by the council and only council is elected) is that often you get a candidate like Bob Popular who and his party gets like 35% of all votes, far ahead of everyone, but the rest of the council makes a coalition against him and appoints Alice Reasonable from some 14% party, which makes people mad ("almost nobody wanted Alice")

well, congress passes the budget. the president then implements it. the president can do a lot by executive order unless congress passes a law against it or the Supreme Court finds it unconstitutional. it's not a vague relationship really, it's quite combative.

@chiasm so likecongress decides what's happening, and the president decides HOW it's happening?
