There's not really a fediverse metric by which bigger is better, once you get past the size where the local timeline is filled with as many interesting people as you can keep up with.Call that Tek's Peak if you will.        @tek There is though, when it comes to hashtag search for example as they only federate partially.Also, power dynamics. You are more willing to give in to another instances requirements of not being domain-blocked if they're a gatekeeper to many accounts.Sent from a 2 person instance btw

       @tek Mastodon has some messaging and marketing challenges in order to help new users understand that they can join any instance while making an educated decision about which instances are best for them. Which is much more consideration than a Twitter signup takes, for better or worse.As of now, I'm not sure what makes a good instance to join outside of a good reputation, and that is hard to find unless you think to look that up.

       @Joseph_of_Earth @tek it’s also the case that instances with barriers to entry might present a roadblock in people’s adoption of these tools altogether. I was just chatting today with a colleague about the need for something like a well-moderated but very easy to join instance for people to try for a short period of time before being transitioned off to other servers. Just learning the tools can be tricky, having a dedicated place to try it out can be good.
