@retroedgetech He did his best, Linux on arm is not for beginners (except for maybe Rasbian on a Pi).

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech the first thing they will be disappointed with that not all software works. well there is a way of course but its not straight forward.

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech the first thing they will be disappointed with that not all software works as its not binary compatible with x86_64 CPUs... Well there is a way of course but its not straight forward.

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech But then Windows on ARM even sucks more like the WoR project.. Yes it exists and it sucks and even less applications are available. Like in case of Linux on ARM 70-80% of the apps are available in case for Windows on Arm its like 10-20% of the applications available. If you are lucky enough to have drivers for your SBC...https://www.worproject.com/

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech Another thing Full OpenGL is not available on Linux on ARM... Most SBCs use OpenGL ES and now have started supporting Vulkan..

@nerdtronics I would also say I found Armbian on the Pinebook Pro and RockPro64 to be easy to setup and use.

@PublicLewdness I looked up the device in the video and it does have piss-poor Linux support, and apparently you can't even fully remove ChromeOS.

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech Wine will also not work unless some type of a compatibility layer which emulates x86_64... That exist like Box86 and Box64 projects and Qemu but not straight forward to use. Projects like Virtualbox will also not work at all.

@PublicLewdness Yeah, installing Armbian or Arch Linux ARM on a Pinebook Pro would be a MUCH better experience.

@nerdtronics If Armbian supported full disk encryption during the installer i'd say it was perfect. Although to be fair only a couple distros offer FDE on ARM right now.

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech If you want shit like DRM, proprietary software and proprietary games on your ARM SBC then go for Android.. If you are a tinkering like of person and want FOSS software then go for Linux and the BSDs... Chrome OS Flex will work but its useless since no Android support available. Its just basically just a browser with some extra steps.

@nerdtronics @retroedgetech I watch Netflix on my raspberry pi 4.. I am using Android 13 AOSP.. I have not even bothered using Netflix on Rasbian.. It does not work well on 64-bit Rasbian you had to install 32-bit chromium.. Also I have lowest subscription for mobile and tablet so there is that as well.

@nerdtronics Just watched the video. The frustration is real. Even supported Intel based Chromebooks can be a pain. I have a stack of Chromeboxes (desktop version of a Chromebook) that I plan on doing the process to. Haven't gotten started with that yet but probably will do it (or with my son's help) in the next week or two. I am typing from my Acer C740 (formerly a #chromebook) on very "linuxy" #devuan #linux. I do have a whole stack of Acer arm based Chromebooks that I wouldn't even know where to start installing Linux on those and probably won't because it likely is not worth the effort. I may be wrong about that, but this guy's frustration may be an indicator. Though I would have a lot more fun with the challenge than he did.

@retroedgetech Yeah, in my opinion the Pinebook Pro is a much better purchase that a chromebook and it will run Linux and BSD.

@retroedgetechHi. I'm looking for a fix for my #chromebook. It doesn't hold the date/time even though the battery seems fine. One would think it's a bios battery problem, but as far as I can tell it doesn't have one. I'd rather not open it up of I don't have to.It seem like you are the only person on the Fedi that works on these things. Do you have any suggestions? ✌

@enduser I may be able to help or point you in the right direction. What model do you have? What operating system are you using? ChromeOS or has it been #coreboot -ed ?

@enduser If you are running #VoidLinux, you may have to set up a NTP client like #chrony. I remember having to do something similar on my son's Artix installation. I forget the details. But essentially install chrony from the package manager and start it so it gets the time from a network server. Let me know if that helps.

@retroedgetech @enduser@mastodon.online I had that thought, but was hoping for a fix that wouldn't need an internet connection. 🤔Of course, Chromebooks might be designed to need to connect in order to function properly. Thank you for you input. I'll set up the NTP thing for now and do more research.
