Some big (and small) Questions about the journa.host server/instance that I’m pondering and would love to hear others’ thoughts: What is its purpose? The short term goal was… short term. A lot of journalists wanted a place to go to check out Mastodon. My hunch: Most news orgs will have their own soon. Lots of independent journos will create their own. If it is going to last a long time, it’ll need more infrastructure—i.e., more than just me leading.

Who is a journalist? So far, it’s been fairly easy to decide who gets in and who doesn’t. But we’ll have lots of edge cases and that’s a whole friggin’ thing. How to play well with other servers? Some servers view news as inherently triggering. They want content warnings on any news item about the elections, international events, war, etc. that’s not how journalists think. and many folks have said they want an easy to engage feed of news.

@adamdavidson Regarding content warnings, I think it would be the right move to find out what the community you are moving into prefers. It is easy to choose to view something with a warning on it. It’s just a different kind of headline.

@adamdavidson Or to put it anouther way, does “checking out mastodon” mean “see if I can do all the same things I did on Twitter and get the same sense of satisfaction from the engagement?” Or does it mean “see what the community vibe and norms are on a new-to-me established platform, and decide if participating in the culture is my cup of tea?” Content warnings are the norm here, and it is a way of being considerate of other people and how they want to engage.

@redhouseproject @adamdavidson I hope the journalist community can come to see CW like, headlines. Lots of people experience them as a way to invite people into engagement with content. I think we have to stop seeing CWs through the lens of culture wars in this context, and more as knowledge more experienced Mastadoners are sharing about what makes a feed work for readers.

@carrideen @redhouseproject @adamdavidson Yes, that is a great point. CWs are headlines, and the post itself is "below the fold." Also -- super important to remember -- any individual user can set their preferences to automatically expand all CW'ed posts in their own feeds, if they prefer not to click and don't worry about being triggered.

@adamdavidson Also, remember this is not a US-centric community, and many long-time users here really don’t give a rats about US politics. Another thing: The consensus seems to be that pushing posts from Twitter blindly is bad form, because people want to interact and have conversations. So please do encourage folks to start here and push to Twitter instead, to come back and have the discussion, to use content warnings, and to be whole people in their interactions.

Moderation/Server blocking:This has been easier than I expected so far. Crazily heinous ugly trolling gets blocked. But I’m sure we’ll have lots of questions that are tougher with time. Should a journalist site use general Mastodon best practices? (That’s my inkling) Or be more open than others (some have suggested)?

Please let me know—in replies or direct message—what you think. And let me know if you want to be a moderator to help with this whole thing. I think you’ll find it interesting and a good way to better understand the challenges/opportunities of social media when you are able to make the decisions and not rely on a big co.

@adamdavidson You may make yourself a target of state and non-state actors. How good is your network security? What else do you use your intended server for? Will you use dedicated access to the internet? If not, what else will share that pipe? How is your local network configured? How ready are you to respond to requests from national and international law enforcement compelling you to produce data?

@adamdavidson @PeteStrzok Exactly! I’ve seen a lot chatter of people who want to become server hosts, and I doubt they realize how much work goes into it. I would love to see a white paper on properly doing this from Peter Swire and Annie Anton.

@adamdavidson re: news being triggering. It feels like the potential solution lies in the decentralization. Is there (or could there be) a way for an individual user to set a preference where everything coming from the journalism server gets…muted while remaining available? Blurred? An automatic warning (“this is news and might be triggering”)? Then users could choose to look if/when they’re ready. Then it’s on us to design that experience for ourselves.

@alibenjamin @adamdavidson - this! It makes the instance/server/community home base even more useful, while giving the consumer of information choices.

@adamdavidson @alibenjamin @stevenpbrumby it looks like the software is currently set up for you to opt in to always expand CW topics, which I have done. I agree, it would be an improvement to be able to control this as an opt out on a server/instance basis. Maybe even individual! I think Mastodon’s cultural norm solves for common social network problems are great, but probably don’t scale.

@jeffbenner @adamdavidson content #filters in your profile settings give you control over what might get CW status, in addition to what the author thinks. i leave 'display CW content' and closely manage my filters. #learningcurve

@adamdavidson a journalist is a lying kike and their shabbos who distorts the truth for a living while claiming to be persecuted for telling the truth. You are Orwell's ministry of truth.
