Eternal September is Usenet slang for a period beginning around 1993 when ISPs began offering Usenet access to many new users. The flood of new users overwhelmed the existing culture of computer pros for online forums and the ability to enforce existing norms. AOL followed with their Usenet gateway service in March 1994,leading to a constant stream of new users.Looks like Mastodon is experiencing an eternal November where newbies and existing users come together.

@Jack5150 eternal november isn't the right name. eternal september was called that because traditionally new college students were given usenet access and fucked up the place before either conforming or being bullied out, i dont know a word that describes "people get angry at twitter and decide to leave" or some independent event or time surrounding it.

@Jack5150 I had no idea AOL had Usenet. I used Prodigy myself until I discovered the local ISP. Then I had to learn Trumpet Winsock to get online...😁

@Jack5150 They won’t be around for long. Mastodon is the linux of social media. It should be pretty funny though

@Libertus I dont think they are getting the engagement they're used to on Twitter. Not enough people and too much blocking by instance admins.

@Jack5150 Just the concept of being federated with home servers is probably too much for most people. Most people dont know how to get back into their accounts when they get a new phone. They will likely throw their tatrums and then quietly go back to twitter, pay their $8.

@Jack5150 @Libertus I'm sure you can probably swap the battery or change the oil maybe if you needed too.But many people cannot or will not.likewise many will not have the patience for mastadon.
