It's really interesting to me to see how many people desperately shit-talk mastodon on twitter. Like there are people getting BITTER about people suggesting Mastodon as an alternative, as if it's insulting, as if the whole thing is riddled and dripping with nazis and terfs and right wing weirdos.And like, I get it! There is a not insignificant amount of people who suck here. Twitter is the same!!!However--

The difference here is that there are so many small, niche communities, so many different moderation styles that you really and truly can curate your experience so that you NEVER see that.I speak from experience!!! I have been here since 2017 and the times I have seen gross/upsetting content like that has been very few and VERY short lived, because it always gets blasted away by the curator.The moderation tools here simply do not exist on twitter and its a game changer.

I don't think masto is perfect, nor do I think it's the be-all end-all for creatives...but it is, I think, the only truly "social" media art-focused site I've ever been on.This is the most communal any SM site I've ever used has felt.And I think people on twitter are so very used to being treated like they are content machines, like they are not real people behind the screen, that the idea of something like this existing feels bizarre and too good to be true.

When you come to Mastodon with the same attitude that you operate with on Twitter, you are likely to have a bad time. If twitter is a PVP arena where everyone is constantly fighting for a place on the leaderboard, Mastodon is the communal minecraft garden down the block. We are simply sharing crops and watering each others plots. Nobody cares how many followers you have. Tell me about your art or your day or your pets. For gods sake just let yourself exist!!!

You can have a home here. You can make it whatever you need it to be. It doesn't have to be big. It doesn't have to be beautifully curated or amazingly put together. It can be all your own.You can be human, you can be messy.But by god all we ask of you here is that you be kind. To yourself, to others. Do not come here ready to fight and claw your way to the same heights twitter expected of you.Make friends, amplify others, and in turn they will do the same for you.
