You can probably run a single user fedi instance for less than $8 dollars a month.

@thatguyoverthere Even cheaper if you use something like a raspberry pi.

@thatguyoverthere I run mine on a Raspberry Pi inside my closet.I pay $8/month for an external IP via https://hoppy.network/, but I use that for other services as well.

@thatguyoverthere I’m pretty sure that’s true for mastodon, absolutely true for something like GoToSocial.

@john yeah something like this works for those who are less technically inclined, but if you have a little experience you could get most of the fedi software running on a generic minimal vps on any hosting provider (or run something like a raspberry pi for even more savings) to help keep the network more distributed.

@thatguyoverthere A $5USD/mo Digital Ocean Droplet plus a domain name would probably run full Mastodon if it was the only thing. Should have no problem with Pleroma, I'd think.

I run a handful of personal servers and also do  fedi development on a single shared hosting account for about $5 / month.  There is also no "flagship instance" of my software. Why? Because I want to make sure that every site can participate as equals no matter what size server it is running or how many people use it. Cheers.

@thatguyoverthere yeah the bottom of this page shows how you can run your own #Mastodon site and other web apps with the free #Yunohost app manager + cheap #VPS hosting like Hetzner https://joinfediverse.wiki/How_to_host_your_own_Fediverse_instance%3F

@thatguyoverthere That's what I do. But if you're retarded like me, content discovery becomes difficult.

@ShockTohp yeah when you first start an instance you have to know a few accounts or servers to follow to help get federation going.
