But I'm always trying to be an optimist. I mean, I'm one of them. I catch myself saying words like "users" instead of "people." As much as I want this to be true, there will need to be tens or hundreds of thousands of new Mastodon / ActivityPub instances spun up to handle the kind of traffic that would flow through the network if the fediverse had 200M active users. Those servers, those databases, the terabits of bandwidth all need to be paid for with real money. Where is that money going to come from? Who is going to maintain the servers, apply patches, deal with DDoS?

@killyourfm I'm reminded of the great WoW to FF14 migration last year after the blizzard sex abuse scandals cane out. There is a limit to how much abuse a community will take. The social inertia that keeps people on a platform that has become toxic is hard to break, but once broken it becomes a flood. WoW is still a ghost town, while FF14 is still doing excellently. Most of the sprouts hung around.

@peepstein @Gecko I believe the answer to both questions is yes. I run marketing and community management for @thunderbird -- it's also free and open source software. There is no fee to use it. There is no "premium" version. We don't have investors. Despite that, our users help us not just survive, but THRIVE. We nearly doubled our staff this year, have a mobile app coming, and lots of features in the works. All because of a small percentage that believe in the software.

@killyourfm Not all of the attention is good. Far too often I see FOSS, such as Mastodon in this case, associated with extremism or hate speech. Because using software that respects your privacy is somehow dangerous.To be perfectly honest, I think the media should stay out. Last thing I want to see is them coming here and acting like Mastodon needs some kind of central authority or government surveillance.
