I've seen a lot of talk about how MiSTer (an FPGA based retrogaming/vintage computing emulator) has gotten too expensive. People aren't wrong that it's expensive, but the cost of entry isn't as high as you might think. We're still talking more than two hundred of USD, but compared to picking up original hardware & a flash cart, it's still competitive. #misterfpga #retrogaming

The most expensive part is still going to be the DE10-Nano, the price of which has only increased due to both demand and parts shortages. Let's say around $250USD. On top of that, you'll need SDRAM ($65) and an OTG USB hub. ($10). But that's actually enough to do most of what you'll want. #misterfpga #retrogaming

This is what I did to originally assemble mine. The extra boards (IO, USB, etc.) are extremely nice to have, but aren't strictly necessary. They're things you can get later if you're eager to get started on the cheap. Similarly, things like the aluminum case MiSTeraddons sells are very very nice, but not strictly necessary. I still use some cheap 3D printed top and bottom plates on mine. #misterfpga #retrogaming

A lot of people would push back that you could just use a Raspberry Pi and save literal hundreds of dollars. And that would honestly be a good enough solution for a lot of people, if RPis weren't unobtanium nowadays. I can feel the latency differences but I'm a snob. #misterfpga #retrogaming

End of the day, I'm hoping the supply chain works itself out sooner than later and FPGA based retrogaming/computing projects get more accessible to everybody.
