       People like to claim that the proliferation of fairy tales displaying wolves as the bad guys indicates some universal dislike of wolves.But this is obviously false. Nobody writes fairy tales about how bad wasps are, because everybody already knows wasps are jerks.No. People write fairy tales about how bad wolves are precisely because everybody thinks of wolves as handsome, charming beasts so noble that you want them to carry you off and serenade you with free-form vocal jazz under the full moon before telling you stories of the most ancient and darkest woods before trees learned to decay whose tales are locked into coal-seams and diamonds.All the stories about how bad wolves are exist because status-conscious parents don't want to be at a dinner party, hear about how their friends' kids married someone respectable like a miller or baker or something, and have to say, "My kid ran off with a wolf!"
