The media has been reporting a lot on mastodon, but often reports as though mastodon is the fediverse. I saw a well-intentioned article today that the platform started six years ago, but this erases the immense amount of work that many put into ActivityPub.Having done standards work myself and learning that I am unable to manage the immense social pressures of coordinating divergent goals and stay happy, my hat's off to the dedicated folks who made the fediverse happen.@cwebber π

yes.the way you hear unfamiliar people talk about it, it sounds like this..."Google Chrome is a service for accessing information online, created by Larry Page."

@blaine@mastodon.social @cwebber@octodon.social So, a bit of a sad thing is that a lot of software don't really conform to the spec. They essentially do what other software does, which makes doing new things that would work with the spec, but aren't in other software yet harder.

@blaine @cwebber not saying you are wrong, but the fediverse is older than that with friendica, diaspora and :gnusocial: gnu social having over a decade each behind them :blobcatshrug:

@FleecewoodMac Yep. Also, it's far older than you know.I made a two-hour-length history podcast that spans almost decade and a half of its history (and in fact more, because the idea of the Fedi stems out of the Internet's organization itself, email, web, rss, xmpp, early attempts at blogosphere and such, so I had to explain all that as well)It's in Russian, though. :)@blaine @cwebber

@cwebber @gaige 2008 was probably too early for the world to understand federated Twitter. π The one thing I made during that time that persists is webfinger & some of the early work on pubsubhubbub. So many other people & projects to tag, but the main point is that focusing on "Mastodon" versus "the Network"/fediverse is sloppy from a journalistic/academic perspective and risks centering power in unhelpful ways. π

@cwebber @blaine @clay I miss compiz days. Wobbly windows, cube desktop, burning windows on close, drawing with particles and ripples. It makes no sense! Why even somebody used it? But it helped me and many others to hook up on Linux and never leave it since.

@a1ba I used wobbly windows. They helped to identify whether the window had latched to the actual screen border. @blaine @cwebber @clay

@a1ba also I think that fun and creativity matter, even if they do not give maximum productivity. If I have fun but everything is a bit slower then I still achieve much more than when Iβm bored and stop before getting anything done. @blaine @cwebber @clay
