It's hard to walk the line between being welcoming of new users (particularly non-English-speaking ones), and protecting this instance against people who don't care about our rules (https://ruby.social/about/more). Every new user on this instance is someone that the moderator(s) essentially becomes responsible for. If someone breaks the rules, the mods end up having to do work. I want to minimise that work, which (hopefully!) has the side effect of increasing the overall quality of discourse here.

@james I manage two instances myself and it's indeed a non-negligible amount of work, thanks for doing it β€οΈ I felt that having some more people on the moderation team (especially in different timezones) helps a lot :)

As #Mastodon hits news websites like the BBC, it's not just #Ruby developer folk that are finding us.At least three people want to join to talk about #rugby, in what I can only assume is a misreading of our instance name π
So every new registration request gets read, and if it's not clear (because registration forms can be confusing), each user is emailed with another opportunity to provide a cogent reason for joining. I've emailed about 100 such folks so far. I think it's working well.

@james In this case it feels like having non-English moderators assisting you would be quite valuable. Especially if they're bilingual. ππ

@james thanks for the peek behind the curtain. It seems that this level of "hand-picking" people only works with limited users, therefore only with federation.

Hope it keeps working. Certainly more productive than my verification technique of tea with the sysop. But what happens if Mastodon becomes too popular and attracts scammers who bombard you with thousands of signup requests? Spam filtering technology repurposed for weeding through applications?

@kronn the #federation aspect is certainly important. I don't want to exclude anyone from the #fediverse, I just also don't want to be responsible for everyone's content. With federation, there's always somewhere else they can be a participant.

@james, what can we as a community do to help the moderators and you? Maintaining this server is significant for you to take on as a volunteer. How do we help?

@james to be fair I was confused if it was the coding language or geology.

@james I do wish there was a lobste.rs-esque invitation tree here, to distribute some responsibility out to the user community.

@james Thank you for your patience with us #Rugby fans. Ruby is truly a barbarian's language coded by gentleman.

@AGMS00 I canβt say for sure how weβll handle that, but I can tell you this: we will figure it out together π
