(Well-funded) Universities should run *open* #Fediverse, and currently specifically #Mastodon, instances. They have the resources (knowledge and hardware), they're non-profit, are largely independent, and to do so aligns with their educational mandate. Same for #Wikipedia, IMO.

@skepteis raise an IT service request. This is what I did at Warwick Uni in the UK.

@skepteis open to students/faculty/alumni perhaps, but I think the domain name should mean something. Of course they could support one on a non-associated domain too.

@alanbell IMO they should mainly run one on an unassociated .org (or so) domain. They already have bad enough reputations as exclusive clubs in the population.

@skepteis At the very least publicly funded institutions should. Public money, public code.

@skepteis why not just support fediverse in general though? if other software got more support, it wouldn't be just mastodon instances people are using

The fact that the current marketing is preferring Mastodon over others is not that great for the fediverse.

@skepteis I don't find this correct (see: "largely"), but do find it interesting. Following and curious about what others think.

@skepteis well. I've had a few discussions about this on here now; the issue is largely about moderation - do universities really want to take on the costs (legal and financial) of moderation? Do staff really want to have their employers looking at their DMs?I suspect most staff wouldn't want that. If unis have instances, i think they'll be only for official 'broadcasts'.

@skepteis You mean open to non-students and staff? Uhmmhh.I would much rather they authenticate their people as being their people by running instances only for their people. "Here's your email address, here's your fedi account."

@skepteis Is that good idea really? Unis are competing as well, and not least for skilled people, projects etc. and not to mention competition btw fields (=university politics). Eg, what happens when you decide to change jobs? Or your employing uni believes you are too critical towards it in public? I would rather see scholarly communities or associations taking responsibility

@skepteis @brembs Let me add that we need something like "Debian Site Reliability Engineers", i.e volunteers that know how to run and operate those open (source) services, similar how Debian Developers know how to package and integrate open source projects

@skepteis I think public universities' ability to effectively moderate an instance will be severely limited by 1A and open records rules. Professional and scholarly associations with their own codes of conduct and ethics are better institutions, though there are real technical and financial gaps.

@skepteis First Amendment. The Freeze Peach crowd would absolutely love to sue public institutions into hosting their harassment and trolling without moderation even as their instance got blocked by other instances.

@skepteis Today in bad #EdTech takes...There's a lot of privileged assumptions here. Who in the university is going to be saddled with the task of running this infrastructure without being properly compensated for the work or the emotional labor that goes along with it? Keep in mind that the "well funded" part rarely trickles down to those tasked with such projects.
