Someone reminded me that I shouldn't find "people to follow" here. Instead, I should find people to *have conversations with.*Unlearning 14 years of Twitter terminology and mindset isn't an overnight thing. But it's important to shift how I look at this space. Because this space is special.

@killyourfm I’ve found most of the folk who get weirdly angry about it are really just suffering from having been pushed into some unhealthy habits from Twitter and other places. It’s fantastic to come here not have that “oh no what now” dread when I see the notification bell light up!

@killyourfm that's a really good point. I've found people friendly here and more likely to have conversations with anyone and not just followers.

@killyourfm I'm really loving browsing the Local timeline for this very reason: you suddenly find a random post that tickles you, you answer, and a conversation can indeed happen with someone new. That's something I never saw happening on Twitter

@killyourfm I opened a Twitter account in 2009 and shut it down in 2020 for a mental health "reset". It felt good to purge it all.I then reopened it in August last year, and decided to use it in "read only" mode. I just follow accounts for news of topics that interest me, but without attracting the engagement of the bots and angry mob. With Mastodon though I'm going to join in and hope it's a more positive experience, the kind of thing I originally thought Twitter would be.

@killyourfm It’s come a bit full circle for me. I originally joined Twitter in 2007 and used it primarily for conversations for years. Something shifted along the way (either in the service, me, or both) and it became more of a way to consume rather than converse. I’m quite happy to be back to conversations here!

@killyourfm I find that attitude exhausting. It's possible to follow, without interaction, and still not be like Twitter.Someone might post interesting links I want to see, without me needing to have a *conversation* about them every time. Or someone posts art I like, maybe even buy, but I don't need to always *say* something. It can be different without being exhausting. Keeping *conversation* as a hard norm risks excluding some of us who aren't always very verbal. Just saying.

@wiredfire Thanks for pointing out yet another unhealthy side-effect of using Twitter: the anxiety! It adds up, and it absolutely screws with our mental health.

@killyourfm@layer8.space Yes, indeed. To be extended perhaps that there are people that hold a conversation in just emoji, reactions, or very delayed responses. Which may look like they are just "following" but are engaging as best they can and when they can. It's not that ableism doesn't exist on the fediverse , but it's less common and what make this a nicer space than places where it's the default.Let's be careful not to lose that :autism: :analyst:

@coth Well said. Value on the Fediverse isn't attributed to lengths of replies, or replies at all. It's just my personal mission to have more meaningful conversations when I do choose to engage.

@herzleid Totally valid viewpoint and approach! Please note that I intentionally used "I" instead of "we" for this very reason. I'm thinking outloud here, not pressuring everyone to adopt my mentality.

@killyourfm It’s alarming how easily it all invaded our thinkmeats and eroded our calm without us realising until we were doomscrolling for the next aggression. I’m thrilled the whole debacle is starting to get some more people thinking about the mental health impacts of it all too.

@killyourfm @john ha! True, but at least they’re old fashioned flame threads that I can just exit easily enough. We don’t tend to have the same level of “pile-on” mentality & people actively looking for trouble.

@ltinuviel As an ex-smoker (who still thinks about it every other day) I feel this.Maybe it's because, like smoking, doing stuff like doomscrolling involves these repeatable and physical gestures.I think half the addiction of smoking is the physical action of it. You know?

@killyourfm so true and I think that's what I'm loving. Instagram used to have a really lovely community vibe where you could properly connect and have conversations but lost that around the time Meta bought it. It's nice to be on a platform that feels like a place for conversation again

@killyourfm this is some of the best advice... it should be about having a conversation.I realize many people just like to watch and read and don't really interact, and in that case mass following is fine. I prefer to use these tools to interact with others, in which case it's a very different set of people / orgs to follow.
