As in the Macedonian phalanx was much bigger and a lot slower than the original Greek Phalanx. They used a six (6) meter spear. They even had a normal separate original Greek phalanx regiment to specifically guard their back.This evolution from the more agile/shorter spear phalanx to the slow moving Macedonian one, able to destroy an army multiple times its size if used correctly, happened after decades of phalanx warfare. Turns out that if you put phalanx Vs phalanx the one with the bigger sticks and better organization wins even if it's slower.Same thing for the Roman army.
