Many are offering their thoughts on what Mastodon should be, but I think we should also be reflecting on what one can offer to this platform and the community on their select instance. Seems like some are operating or wishing for the same things from ~the other place~ but I am liking how over here, it seems the connections between people are emphasized and that one is asked to curate their content, rather than add and respond to current trends.

I think it is nice to have a fresh platform from which we can build community amongst scientists as we (re-)connect with each other. I suspect with continued growth, more specific instances will develop for communities where more local conversation is helpful (say disciplines of each science). And perhaps for now, we need not have a decided form that this could or should be – organic community network formation might be worthwhile!

Perhaps it is my nature as an early-career researcher of color to want to assimilate to the existing community rather than announce and shape what I want this platform to be. But I think introspection into what we want from a social media network is valuable. For me, I would like to offer a postdoc perspective into the structures of academia, and share my efforts in science reform and Open Science (particularly those advocating for ECRs). I hope to share my research on visual attention too!

I do agree that ~the other place~ had a valuable function which was allowing more visible scientists to connect with the public. I don't think Mastodon should be a place for that – we should be rethinking how we do scientific communication anyhow, perhaps more pointedly valuing and forming better platforms for it (the other place will probably be good for that for a while). I like the idea of better recognition of public-facing content by scientists, and other outlets like The Conversation.
